I will be attending church with my Mother and Grandmother this morning. After Church, we will return to my parents home and eat the meal that I have prepared along with one of my girlfriends. Two of my Mother's Friends will be with us as well along with their children for dinner. My Mother and Grandmother will open presents that my brother and I have given them for Mother's Day. It will be a wonderful gathering with family and friends and I am thankful that I can allow my Mom to relax today and allow her children to show their appreciation for all she has done for us.

Jeff Maynor Takes You Backstage at "It's Only Rock and Roll"

3's Weekend Morning Show--Exclusive Backstage Photos

Jeff Maynor and Kim Carnes--Superstar, Lovely Lady and Real Trouper!

Jeff Maynor, Rob Parissi of Wild Cherry, Patsy Maynor

What a night at Cleveland Public Hall! Saturday night the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame presented its annual benefit for its education programs, one of the most eclectic rock concerts ever, "It's Only Rock and Roll."

Nowhere else on the planet would you find Kim Carnes ("Bette Davis Eyes") sharing a stage with the original rap group, the Sugarhill Gang. Think Patty Smyth of Scandal ("Warrior", "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough") has ever followed Louis Prima, Jr. ("Just a Gigolo","Jump, Jive and Wail") before? And you can bet this was the first time Lou Gramm of Foreigner ("Cold as Ice", "Feels Like the First Time") has ever been on a bill with 60's white soul dynamo Roy Head ("Treat Her Right").

Rock Hall of Fame Director Terry Stewart welcomed the crowd seated at the $3000 tables on the floor at Public Hall. Terry introduced me and I introduced the story i did, with videographer Mike Greene and editor Sean Mulroy on the Rock Hall education programs which include "Toddler Rock", "Schoolhouse Rock" and distance learning programs that extend nationwide and around the world.

A few days before the show it was up in the air whether Kim Carnes would be able to make the date or not. She was ill, whatever it was was in her throat, and she considered cancelling. Backstage she was rather quiet, perhaps saving her voice, but told me she wouldn't have missed the event unless she was confined to bed.

Though she didn't write "Bette Davis Eyes", it always sounded to me like an inspired marriage of singer and song.

"How did you work out how you were going to sing it?" I asked.

"I just sang," she said. "That's how I sing."

On stage she was in great form and wowed the audience who clapped along with the 1-2-1 woodblock beat and some of the women used their hands to frame their "Bette Davis Eyes."

After her set I again brought up her idiosynchratic singing on that multi-million seller, and she said she'd send me her latest CD to convince me she "always" sings that way.

Rob Parissi, lead singer of Wild Cherry ("Play That Funky Music, White Boy") was on our show Saturday. I told him he looked more like an insurance salesman than a onetime rock star. He said, "Hey we only had that one hit. I can't afford the cost of upkeep on rock star hair all these years."

Rob and Wild Cherry were all from the Steubenville area. He now lives in Tampa, but told me after two hurricanes he's moved to the highest, driest area of Tampa to safeguard his home recording studio. Rob is working on a new solo soft jazz album.

I asked him how much rehersal time he'd had with the house band here. "One run through this afternoon," he said. "Each band member learned his part, on his own, and they came to Cleveland ready to play."

The backing band, led by Will Lee of the David Letterman Show band, was supertight, a real highlight of the show. Will's representatives had been trying for weeks to get him on our show, but it couldn't be worked out. He's returning to Cleveland June 14 at the Ohio Theater at Playhouse Square with his own band that plays the music of the Beatles. They're called the Fab Faux, and Matt Babb, our show director says he's heard them on the Howard Stern show and they are crazy good. I hope to have Will on our Weekend Show in the runup to June 14. The Ohio Theater is a great music venue. It only seats about a thousand so, if you're interested in Will Lee's Beatles show June 14, get your tickets in advance. Matt tells me the other members of Will's band are from the Conan O'Brien show.

The Sugarhill Gang filled the stage with audience members who hip-hopped along with them. I wonder how many people there remember the mother of one of the group members. In 1956 Micky and Sylvia recorded one of the most iconic songs in the rock canon, "Love is Strange." Sylvia Vanderpool Robinson would go on to found Sugar Hill Records which begat the Sugarhill Gang which begat rap music.

Rob Parissi closed the show with "Play That Funky Music". Before he went on I asked him how he got to close the show. "With your dark suit and crew cut, you look the least like a rock star of anyone here."

"I got the closing spot because, after the show I get to go out and work the crowd to see if I can sell some insurance policies," Rob said.

Regular viewers may know one of my favorite current music groups is Dale Watson and The Lonestars from Austin, Texas. Alt country. Dale's bass player, Gene Kurtz, who looks like a road warrior who may have been playing back in the 60's, once told me he co-wrote Roy Head's great hit, "Treat Her Right." Backstage I asked Roy if Gene had been his co-writer and he said "Yep, I was talkin' to Gene on the phone last night." They're both Texas boys. Roy has an 80-acre horse farm.

"It's Only Rock and Roll" raised $300-thousand dollars for the Rock Hall's education programs.

In the midst of the memorable concert was an auction. Top bid of the evening was $26-thousand dollars for dinner with LeBron James. Go Cavs!

Behind the Scenes: Producer's View

Hey everyone, it's Caitlin, your producer. For today's blog, I shot some behind the scenes stuff of what I do to prepare the show. I'm the one who puts the stories and writes them. I work on the show throughout the week, scheduling live shots and guests. I also put those live shots into the rundown so they are ready on Saturday and Sunday. On the day of the show, I come in around 3 a.m. to start work. Click on the video below to see what it's like when I first arrive.

video

So the first few hours I spend choosing the stories and putting them in the rundown. I figure out what order to put them and how to fit them around the live shots and guests. The next video is around 5:30 a.m. when most of the stories are in and I'm starting to write.

video

This last video is around 8 a.m. and really all that's left to do is print scripts for the director Matt, tidy up some scripts and make any last minute changes. Enjoy the video!

What Mother's Day reminds me to do

As I looked at a photo from my first Mother's Day, it made me realize how fast time slips by and how quickly our little ones grow. Terry Pitak is now 9...going on 16! I kept a journal of all of our firsts together...our first Christmas, our first show at Playhouse Square...I love to look back on those moments now. Everyone told me that when you have a second child, many times you forget to do the things you did with your first. I do have a journal for my little Max, but I have to admit it's not nearly as full as Terry Pitak's.

As a mom, who wasn't sure I would ever be lucky enough to have my boys, I am so grateful to have Terry and Max. No matter how a family is formed whether by birth or adoption, it is such a sacred bond. I will make sure to remember that as I tuck them in bed tonight, and hopefully I will write about the day in my journals! Kim

It was a "Big Fun Show" today!

We had a great Mother's Day Show today! This morning when I came in I gathered up all the photos of our moms to make up the the art work that you saw in the "Big Fun Show" and on the Blog, as I'm walking around, boy are my feet aching...I started wearing orthotics in my shoes and these dogs were barking! OUCH!

Speaking of dogs, here's our "Dog on the Blog" for this week. This is Simba, he's a 7 month old puppy who needs a good home. Find some room in your home and heart and adopt a shelter animal today!

Keep on Bloggin' Dawn Happy Mother's Day Mom! I love you!

Happy Mother's Day! Sunday, May 11th

10:30 a.m.
Happy Mother's Day to all. I hope you enjoyed the show this morning. We had fun showing pictures of our moms. If you missed them, you can see them here on the blog just below where you are reading now. Also coming up on the blog, we'll try to add some more of you emails of how you will be spending Mother's Day with your mom. Also, Jeff will share with you a behind the scenes look at last night's Rock Hall Benefit, and our producer Caitlin will share a look behind the scenes at how today's show was put together, starting with when she walked in to an empty newsroom early, early this morning.

Check back often, and tell your friends about the new Weekend Morning Show Blog here on WKYC.com.

Matt, Director

10:25 a.m.
Make sure you check back later today. We're going to put a nice little behind the scenes segment that I taped overnight. You'll get to see what I do to prepare the show.

10:17 a.m.
Hey everyone. A funny story to share from the control room here. Another thing I do while we are on the air, if I have time, is start to put together the noon show. So today, I started to put together the noon show, only to remember we DON'T have a noon show today! I've known it for days but I just completely forgot during the show! Director Matt was making fun of me, and asked how long I had been working on it. Fortunately, I only put in a few stories and had only spent a few minutes, but even still. Now you can see, all this busy work, makes me forget that I'm off early today!

10:10 a.m.
It's Caitlin again. Thanks to Matt for helping me with the blog today. I've been going back and forth trying to add these graphics. Anyway, we've been showing pictures from the crew and Jeff and Kim of all of us with our mother's, or in Kim's case her with her kids. All the pictures are posted on the blog too.

10:07 a.m.
It's Matt, the director. With Del's piece on the air, I finally have a chance to contribute to today's show blog. Keep sending in those Mother's Day emails, and we will post some of the ones that don't get on the air right here on the blog.

9:54 a.m.
I have to apologize to our blog watchers today. I have been very busy in the booth today. I've been reading emails and trying to put in graphics for our viewer emails segments. Plus, I have to get the guests and bring them out to the studio. I know, no excuses, but it just has been busy. But the viewer emails are coming up next!

8:58 a.m.
Happy Mother's Day! We're getting ready to go. Today we are taking viewer emails and asking people to tell us what they are doing with their moms for Mother's Day. Jeff and Kim will read some of them on air.

What I Did On My Spring Vacation, Part Deux

We are back from a week in the Arizona desert, the East Valley of Phoenix, actually, and wanted to share with friends pictures of our tribe of grandkids. People enjoy hearing the names chosen by our daughter Beth and son-in-law Bobby. Chloe Autumn is 9, Jade Summer is 7, Cooper Blue is 5, Juniper Spring is 20 months and her little sister Juliet Winter is six months old. Unfortunately Chloe was on a field trip to the Grand Canyon when the pictures were taken so we'll have to get pictures of her next visit.

Here's Juniper, Junebug, "Bug" for short, watering the plants.

Jade, Cooper and June at the playground.

Beth feeding Juliet when we went out for dinner.

Juliet who is almost always smiling.

Laptops: No problems...today

video

Well, as you can see, Jeff and Kim were finally able to log on to the laptops today, after a few minor hiccups, but we failed to really tie them into the show today. Tomorrow we will again pose a question to you, the viewer and blog reader, like we did last weekend to try and better incorporate your input into our broadcast. We'll probably ask something about your favorite Mother's Day memory, what you're doing for Mother's Day, that sort of thing, and then share some of them on the air with you tomorrow morning starting at 9am.

You can send your comments now to... weekendmorningshow@wkyc.com

Busy Day Today

10:30 a.m.
Thanks for joining us today! Shortly, we'll be posting a "web only" interview with Rob Parissi of Wild Cherry that Jeff shot after the interview they did on this morning's show.

10:24 a.m.
We're almost done with the show. I've added a story right after Del's Folks. I added it at the last minute. It was killed earlier in the show, when I was heavy but we picked up some time at the end. So we added it back in at the end! And Jeff loves the story too!

10:15 a.m.
As I predicted, I haven't had much blogging time today. I've been changing some information for live shots and bringing in guests. As for today's clock, we've been pretty heavy and pretty light. But the anchors are filling in quite nicely. We're done with guests and live shots now, so coming up next is Del!

9:49 a.m.
So our Cedar Point live shot is done. The live shot went down just a few minutes before we had took it live on air. Our photographer Imad was working hard to get it back up. With a live shot at Cedar Point, the photographer has to park the truck at a specific spot in the parking lot, so the signal can shoot across the lake to our station. So I'm not sure what caused it to go down, but Imad got the shot back up in time.

9:17 a.m.
We're off to a good start so far. The Cedar Point interview went well. Our second live shot is coming up and it is finally all set and ready to go. Also, our first studio interview is about to go on. Normally I have more time to blog, but with the amount of content we have today, I may not get to write quite as often. Commercial breaks are a great time to blog but today I will be running in and out to get guests. But as always, I will do my best!

8:58 a.m.
We're getting ready to go and we've got a packed show today! We've got two live shots and three in-studio guests! We're already had one last minute change, one of our live shots wasn't quite set for the opening of the show, so we had to switch to the other live shot for the tease ahead! It wasn't a big deal, but here's hoping the rest of the live shots go smoothly!
