Each Saturday, we highlight a couple of children's books to stress the importance of literacy.

While Kim was at Applewood Elementary in Brunswick recently, the students shared some of their favorite books with her. The theme was being kind to others and not bullying each other.

First, is "Recess Queen" by Alexis O'Neill. This is about a playground bully, who is a girl, but there is a happy ending.

Next is "Carla's Sandwich" by Debbie Herman. It's about a little girl who gets teased at lunch because of her unusual sandwiches. It teaches respect and tolerance.

And finally for the younger kids, "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes. The main character is teased about her name, but ends up with a good dose of self esteem.

There are two great books that combine nature, wildlife and snow. They are books filled with beautiful photos and are favorites in Kim's house.

First, is "Stranger In The Woods" by Carl Sams and Jean Stoick. It's a book full of color photos of animals that you find in the woods, and a snowman that is the center of attention.

The second book, by the same authors, is "First Snow in the Woods". It's called a photographic fantasy, and it really is. It might even inspire you and your kids to take a hike in the woods.

And if your child loves animals, "Circus Ship" by Chris Van Dusen could be fun to read together.
It's about some circus animals who become stranded on an island, and how the townspeople help them. It's a great story about the connection between people and animals.
