The Big Fun Show
We had some "Big Fun Shows!" this weekend. Saturday we were at a British Car Show and saw some great old Jaguars. On Sunday we tried to go live from Twins Day Festival but our Live Truck couldn't get a signal out to our receive site.
Bruce gave us some mild weather and Jeff entertained us with an infinity strobe light he got from Cedar Point and Kim did her best to not get hypnotized by Jeff's new toy.
We couldn't get our Live Web Chat going on the Weekend Morning Show Blog this weekend, but hopefully you'll all join us again next weekend!
Woof! Woof! Time for "Dog On the Blog"! Today we have Oscar. He is an 8-10 year old poodle mix. He is an affectionate dog who will keep you lap warm. He will do best in a home with older children.
Please adopt a shelter animal today! Don't forget, kitties need homes too!
Today we have Roo! She is a year and a half old Australian Cattle Dog/Corgi mix, who could use a good home. She loves to get her tummy scratched. She loves to play fetch. She's an active dog who would work well in a home with children. Please adopt a shelter animal today!
Starr Sightings: Inside Studio A - "A Somber Sunday"
Following the unfortunate fatal shooting of an officer over night, we decided to send Jeff out to cover a press conference to find out more details. Kim held down the fort in Studio A. With Dawn directing the last hour of the show, director Matt was able to post video to the web and stream the press conference live with the help of Julie at the desk. Producer Caitlin did a nice job of pulling together the changes for the show at the last minute. Great job to the weekend morning show team for pulling together to get the coverage on the air and web so our viewers were able to find out the latest information.
During the show, we had our live webchat up and running, as well as a live stream of the press conference. Jeff and Kim did a great job with covering the story in a respectful and professional way, as WKYC always does. The mood in Studio A was somber and serious today. Some of you may have been watching the live video from Studio A and could see all was calm here. Anytime we have a fallen officer, the newsroom is aware of the impact on the community and the atmosphere here shows this. We stay busy and bring you the latest coverage, but we all keeping the situation in perspective.
Although we didn't have too much time to chat here at WKYC with all of the breaking coverage, we appreciate all of you who logged on to share your thoughts and feelings on this tragedy, especially the family and friends of this fallen hero.
Our Technical Director Dawn will not be writing her usual "Big Fun Show" recap today. Dawn was not feeling well the entire show, so she went home right after we went off the air. She didn't even want any Oreos so she must have been sick.
Normally Dawn writes about the things she liked on the show, so in her place I will say that being the animal lover she is, I know that she enjoyed the story about the cow that acted like a person. Who didn't love the Oreo Licking contest? She also commented on how she liked all of the packages in today's show.
Feel better Dawn! Hope to see you on Sunday for "Dog on the Blog"!
Wow! It was a jam packed show today with some great interviews and some BIG Checks for charity! We had some fun with the Fab Faux! Live at Parade the Circle.
Did I mention I was driving the bus today? Yah, Matt coordinated a lot of the guests and lended a hand getting the live chat going. Oh by the way, he was under the news desk at one point hooking Jeff up to do the Live Chat! Jess asked if I could see Matt in our Jib shot, I said no, not really knowing what Matt was doing! Way to go Matt!
As far as driving the bus...All I was looking for was hitting my sound on tapes right and getting off the air on time! It takes a village to get the bus running. Raleigh, our cameraman was a great deal of help when I was marking our format. Also, Jerry, our signal acquisition man was running around helping everyone! Let's not forget Jose, who had my back in the audio booth! We'll do it again tomorrow!
Jeff and Kim got lots of e-mail today! I'm with Betty from Parma, I want to see the new Indiana Jones movie too!
Woof! Woof! It's "Dog on the Blog" time! Today we saw Lee, who is a 7 year old Lab mix. He's got a gentile temperament and would love to be adopted today. You and call (216) 525-4827 to inquire about adopting Lee. Please find a place in your home and your heart for a shelter animal!
In the "green room" footage with today's "dog on the blog"
In this video you can see how Bruce goes from his weather portion right into the dog segment.
How cool was the Vatican display at the Historical Society! Wow, I think I'm gonna go see that exhibit! So, Matt and I were switching chairs today, and I actually got to leave the room and run camera for our gadget segment.
Before I left I got video of Matt! The most important thing to remember is always mic the guest! Guess what? I didn't get a mic on the guest until Jose, our audio man, shouted out to me on the headset, "The guest has no mic?" Yikes! It was :15 seconds out from break and I got a mic on our guest!
Here is a clip that Dawn shot of Matt calling and switching during the 10 o'clock half hour.
10:30 a.m. Well, we had a couple of rocky moments. Bruce's mic fell off. That's why you couldn't hear him during his first forecast. Also, we still ended up having issues with the "Gadget" guy despite our quick hustle. We were all set to go, and realized he still didn't have a mic on. So Dawn quickly ran up and mic'd him seconds before he was on the air.
Then he went longer than expected since his "talk to type" trick didn't work the first time, and it ended up costing Bruce time at the end of the show. That's live tv, you just have to roll with whatever is thrown at you.
We'll try again tomorrow. - Matt
9:52 a.m. It's Matt again. Dawn is wrapping up her stint as TD/Director. I'll be taking the seat in just a couple of minutes. Meanwhile, here is a clip of Dawn doing her thing as TD and director during the 9:30 portion of the show.
9:37 a.m. It's Matt. Dawn is currently switching and directing, so it gives me a chance to blog a little. We have everything set up in studio b for the "gadget guy". If you are into electronic gadgets, stay tuned for that segment coming up in the 10 o'clock half hour. I'll have to check them out after the show if he is still here. I love that kind of stuff. Also coming up at 10 a.m. I will be switching and directing.
9:13 a.m. This is Brooke, filling in for our regular producer. Great timely topic coming up this morning... a Doctor from Robison Memorial is in studio today, to talk about summer kids safety. Catch the interview at about 9:17.
By the way, here is Kim during a package with a quick wave to all of you in blog land. This is the view of Kim and Jeff that I have throughout the course of the show. I see them on TV like the home viewer only with backstage access.
9:07 a.m. Hey, it's Lauren. Like Matt said, it's been a busy morning. Caitlin's not here today. I went into studio B before the show and shot some footage of the guest in there. He showed me the things he is going to show today. I got to play with his Mac Air laptop a little.
Here is that video of "Gadget Guy's" setup as shot buy our intern Lauren...
8:45 a.m. Good Morning, it's Matt. Wow, busy morning. I just found out that one of our guests needs much more space and setup time than we had anticipated. Due to this, we had to light up studio b, white balance 3 more camera, get microphones ready, and a demo table set up all in about 10 minutes and be ready for the show to start right at 9. Gotta love live tv.
Jeff was enjoying some bar-be-que at home today while Kim held the fort with Bruce.
I like Bruce's coat! That's a fashion statement! Actually, did you notice, Kim had the same color on under her blazer. They looked great today!
Let's talk about some of our 4-legged friends. We had Dr. Carol Osborne on our show today. She's a veterinarian who was talking about nutritional strategies for older dogs with arthritis. Dr. Carol's little friend was named Joe.
It's "Dog on The Blog" time. We have a senior dog today who could use a good home. Rascal is a 13 year old miniature poodle who could use some love and attention. Please adopt a shelter animal young or old! Don't forget you can help control the pet population by getting you critters fixed!
Kim was solo! Where was Jeff? Vacation ? Kim looked great today! I love the headband! Well Matt and I switched up the job responsibilities a bit today, and oh boy it shows! I made a couple mistakes...and so did Matt but I think he made his mistakes to make me feel better!
We all want to give our viewers the best show possible...but to add to the "Big Fun" we might have a few mistakes! Laugh along with us when you see something that doesn't look quite right.
The laptops were back! I don't know who got more e-mails today, Jeff or Kim? Keep those e-mails coming! On the left, you can see Jeff and Kim 5 minutes before show time getting all dressed up, mic'd up, and logged on for today's show.
Woof! Woof! Time for the "Dog on the Blog"! Today we met Marathon. He's a 3 year old yellow Labrador who could use a good home. Please adopt a shelter animal! Don't forget kitty cats need a home too! And PLEASE help control the pet population and spade or neuter your pets!
We had another big fun show today! We were missing something though...Ah...the laptop computers. Tomorrow we'll have them on set and we'll be asking viewers to log on and respond to a hot topic.
I'm sure Jeff will say he gets more viewer mail than Kim so be sure to e-mail Kim at kimwheeler@wkyc.com, oh you can e-mail Jeff too at jeffmaynor@wkyc.com.
This morning Jeff asked our technical director, Dawn, to make him some graphics from a show he saw on Mother's Day, Barefoot in the Park, at the Geauga Lyric Theater, which is in the old movie theater at Chardon Square. Anyhow, this is how Dawn goes about making these graphics for him.
First, Dawn has to call up the website where the picture exists on a computer that she can see in the control room. Below is Director Matt Babb asking Dawn how she is doing on the project.
Hopefully she can get the computer up and running. Let's check in on her again.
OK, now she has what she needs, so what does she do with it?
It's showtime! Here is Dawn putting her now finished graphics on the air. This is actual control room footage of Dawn switching the show.
Finally, kudos from Jeff for all of her hard work. Way to go, Dawn!
We had a great Mother's Day Show today! This morning when I came in I gathered up all the photos of our moms to make up the the art work that you saw in the "Big Fun Show" and on the Blog, as I'm walking around, boy are my feet aching...I started wearing orthotics in my shoes and these dogs were barking! OUCH!
Speaking of dogs, here's our "Dog on the Blog" for this week. This is Simba, he's a 7 month old puppy who needs a good home. Find some room in your home and heart and adopt a shelter animal today!
Keep on Bloggin' Dawn Happy Mother's Day Mom! I love you!
It's all about Rock & Roll! We had a real rock star on the big fun show today! Wow! How cool was Rob Parissi of Wild Cherry! Come on now, who hasn't turned up the volume and sung along ..."Play that funky music white boy!" We also talked about "School of Rock" and we saw some Dream Girls.
We'll be having some big fun on tomorrows show, cause it's Mother's Day!
We had a great time today behind the scenes and on the air. We learned that Kim's fashion can be painful, and Jeff isn't always on set as the show goes along. Today I got Burce's trivia question right! I love the Beatles and today's question was right up my alley. I'm looking forward to some big fun tomorrow!
Lots of animal stories today! Pig on the highway, big goldfish, snakes, adopt some dogs and we were at the zoo for Earth Day! Stay tuned for next weeks "Big Fun Show"! Jeff will be back to tell us stories about his grandchildren, Kim will tell us about how her garden is coming along and Bruce will give us another trivia question and the most accurate weather forecast in town.
