Starr Sightings: Inside Studio A - "A Somber Sunday"

Following the unfortunate fatal shooting of an officer over night, we decided to send Jeff out to cover a press conference to find out more details. Kim held down the fort in Studio A. With Dawn directing the last hour of the show, director Matt was able to post video to the web and stream the press conference live with the help of Julie at the desk. Producer Caitlin did a nice job of pulling together the changes for the show at the last minute. Great job to the weekend morning show team for pulling together to get the coverage on the air and web so our viewers were able to find out the latest information.

During the show, we had our live webchat up and running, as well as a live stream of the press conference. Jeff and Kim did a great job with covering the story in a respectful and professional way, as WKYC always does. The mood in Studio A was somber and serious today. Some of you may have been watching the live video from Studio A and could see all was calm here. Anytime we have a fallen officer, the newsroom is aware of the impact on the community and the atmosphere here shows this. We stay busy and bring you the latest coverage, but we all keeping the situation in perspective.

Although we didn't have too much time to chat here at WKYC with all of the breaking coverage, we appreciate all of you who logged on to share your thoughts and feelings on this tragedy, especially the family and friends of this fallen hero.

Stay Tuned,

Jess Starr

Our debut live web chat was a success. I hope you had a chance to log on and chat it up with Kim, Jeff, Bruce and the rest of our crew this past weekend.

If you didn't however, you will have plenty of chances. We are planning on keeping the live chat up and running during the weekend morning show for the foreseeable future. We also plan to keep up the live studio camera stream so you can keep your eyes on what's going on behind the scenes.

If you have any questions or comments about our live web chat, live studio stream, or whatever... feel free to email them to us at weekendmorningshow@wkyc.com

Starr Sightings: Inside Studio A - "Live Webchat"

Today we did our first live webchat on the weekend morning show. I didn't get to post much because it was a busy show in the studio... but what a great thing to have. I love seeing viewer responses come up on the screen as things are happening on the show.

I call my part of the blog "Starr Sightings: Inside Studio A" but now you can see inside the studio for yourself! The crew set up a bump shot of the studio so you can watch what happens during the show. You can see Jeff, Kim and Bruce do what they do best. You can also see me running around getting the sets ready and interacting with the anchors. You may not need my part of the blog anymore because now you can watch inside the studio each weekend. But I'll keep on blogging and fill you in on what you can't hear!

I only lost Jeff once today, which isn't bad for a hectic Saturday! However, he walked through the chroma key again. It was funny, though! Other than that, I think Jeff was at his desk a lot because he was chatting with everyone. This could work to my advantage.

Stay tuned,
Jess Starr

Webchatting: Day 1

Here a couple of video from behind the scenes of Day 1 of webchatting here on the Weekend Morning Show Blog. Did you enjoy the webchat and the live behind the scenes camera. Send your comments to weekendmorningshow@wkyc.com (you can read the entire chat below on the blog if you're interested)

In this video... you can see Director Matt webchatting in the back of the control room just as the chat launched, welcoming our web chatters.

video

Next is Director Matt Babb, who was not directing today, getting producer Caitlin Kollar up to speed on the webchatting. It's very difficult to do all of this while keeping a smooth show moving on the air, but we seem to have pulled it off.

video

So Kim, how did Webchatting: Day 1 go for you today?

video

Finally, you can see the guys from "Fab Faux" webchatting with some of the folks at home after their appearance on the show.

video

All in all, I would say that we are very pleased with our first attempt at a live webchat, so we'll try it again tomorrow. Please check back with us Sunday at 8:45 or so as we do Webchatting: Day 2 from the WKYC studios.

Wednesday on the blog...

Kim Wheeler interviews A.J. Colby to find out how he's been since leaving the weekend morning show. For those of you who don't know, A.J. is now on at 6pm and 11pm on weekends after spending several years with Kim and Jeff. Does he miss Jeff & Kim and the weekend morning shift? Does he watch the show when he's off? And what does he really think about blogs? Kim will get to the bottom of these and other topics with A.J. tomorrow on the "Weekend Morning Show" blog here on WKYC.com.

Show Blog: Sunday, June 1, 2008

10:31 a.m.
The show is over. Nothing majoy went wrong today, which is a good thing. We'll have more info on the dog coming up shortly, as well as some more behind the scenes video for you to check out.
Stay tuned for the News at noon and then our same crew will hang around to bring you "Indians On Deck" coming up at 1:30 on STO.

10:20 a.m.
We're in Between the Lines right now. Kate, our intern on Sundays is talking with Matt and learning what directors do, what they control and what TD's do as well. We'll have some behind the scenes video of it, up later!

Here's the behind the scenes control room video that Caitlin promised.

video

10:15 a.m.
Jeff mentioned it on air, but just a reminder. We don't have any shows next weekend. We've been preempted by the French Open. We'll be back on June 14th.

9:42 a.m.
If you didn't catch it in the first half hour, Bruce was doing his big weather hit. We had his name super up, and it was covering a storm he was talking about, so he said "Get rid of that name!" Dawn is TD-ing and Directoring right now, so she dropped his name super. It was pretty funny!

9:30 a.m.
In this half hour, Kim is interviewing some kids from Lincoln School in Lakewood. They painted chairs, which will be auctioned off to raise money for the Cleveland Foodbank. The interview is with the teacher, but the students are in studio. since they really didn't get to talk during the show, we did a behind the scenes interview with them. Check back later today those interviews.

9:13 a.m.
So we're taking your emails today. Here's our question, what summer movie are you most excited to see? Send your emails to weekendmorningshow@wkyc.com and we'll read them on the air!

9:02 a.m.
Good morning everyone! It's your producer Caitlin. I'm back today. I had yesterday off, so I could watch my younger brother graduate from high school in Columbus. Congrats Kevin! So onto today's show! We're live out at the IX Center this morning, where thousands of motorcyclists are gathering for the 22nd Annual Teddy Bear Ride. It's going to be a loud shot, but it should be fun!

Show Blog: Saturday, May 31st

Here is a clip that Dawn shot of Matt calling and switching during the 10 o'clock half hour.

video

10:30 a.m.
Well, we had a couple of rocky moments. Bruce's mic fell off. That's why you couldn't hear him during his first forecast. Also, we still ended up having issues with the "Gadget" guy despite our quick hustle. We were all set to go, and realized he still didn't have a mic on. So Dawn quickly ran up and mic'd him seconds before he was on the air.

Then he went longer than expected since his "talk to type" trick didn't work the first time, and it ended up costing Bruce time at the end of the show. That's live tv, you just have to roll with whatever is thrown at you.

We'll try again tomorrow. - Matt

9:52 a.m.
It's Matt again. Dawn is wrapping up her stint as TD/Director. I'll be taking the seat in just a couple of minutes. Meanwhile, here is a clip of Dawn doing her thing as TD and director during the 9:30 portion of the show.

video

9:37 a.m.
It's Matt. Dawn is currently switching and directing, so it gives me a chance to blog a little. We have everything set up in studio b for the "gadget guy". If you are into electronic gadgets, stay tuned for that segment coming up in the 10 o'clock half hour. I'll have to check them out after the show if he is still here. I love that kind of stuff. Also coming up at 10 a.m. I will be switching and directing.

9:13 a.m.
This is Brooke, filling in for our regular producer. Great timely topic coming up this morning... a Doctor from Robison Memorial is in studio today, to talk about summer kids safety. Catch the interview at about 9:17.

By the way, here is Kim during a package with a quick wave to all of you in blog land. This is the view of Kim and Jeff that I have throughout the course of the show. I see them on TV like the home viewer only with backstage access.

video

9:07 a.m.
Hey, it's Lauren. Like Matt said, it's been a busy morning. Caitlin's not here today. I went into studio B before the show and shot some footage of the guest in there. He showed me the things he is going to show today. I got to play with his Mac Air laptop a little.

Here is that video of "Gadget Guy's" setup as shot buy our intern Lauren...

video

8:45 a.m.
Good Morning, it's Matt. Wow, busy morning. I just found out that one of our guests needs much more space and setup time than we had anticipated. Due to this, we had to light up studio b, white balance 3 more camera, get microphones ready, and a demo table set up all in about 10 minutes and be ready for the show to start right at 9. Gotta love live tv.

Show Blog: Sunday, May 25

10:28 a.m.
The copyright just rolled and it was another great show!

10:27 a.m.
Oh no, Bruce's maps are up and it looks like rain. We may have to dodge some raindrops.

10:26 a.m
Bruce is up next with the final weather forecast, I have to pay attention! Will we have good bar-be-que weather.

10:21 a.m.
It's Dawn and "Between The Lines" is nearly over and we're all talking about our Memorial Day plans. I'm going to be doing some house painting, and my husband is going to bar-be-que us some steaks.

10:15 a.m.
It's Matt. We're in "Between The Lines" now, which is on tape today, so it finally gives me a chance to blog. I'm still a little tired from the Kenny Chesney concert last night. It was a fun time, but what a long day. Today, I'm looking forward to the Indians game. My nephew, Logan gets a chance to be in the kids starting lineup. He's so excited. I'm heading down after the noon show, and Bruce says the weather should be great. Go Tribe!

9:45 a.m.
So our second live shot with the Greek Festival is up. Normally I have this live shots planned out ahead of time, but this week is a bit different. The coordinators are changing the guests and locations out in the field. It's not a big deal, as long as we know the names of the guests ahead of time.

9:35 a.m.
We've got two dog segments this week. We've got our regular segment that Bruce will do with the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs. Plus, Dr. Carol, a local veterinarian is here with another dog, she'll talk about treatments to keep dogs healthy.

9:11 a.m.
Good morning everyone. It's Caitlin your producer. I hope you are all enjoying your Memorial Day weekend. We're off to a good start today. We're live at the Greek Festival today. The guest for our first hit, didn't get to the location until about 5 minutes before we went live. Fortunately, he made it on time, and Chris, our photographer, got him mic'd up in time.

10:28 a.m.
The trivia question was a great one today! We all had different answers here in the control room and on set. Kim and Jess got it right. You should have heard the yells in here when the answer was revealed. If you missed it, check back later this week for the answer.

10:19 a.m.
Our guests at the Rib Cook-Off have been great today. They have all been talking a lot and giving us a lot of information. They are also hilarious! We are cracking up here in the booth. But they aren't the quietest guests, so when I hear them in my headset, I hear a lot of yelling, but that's ok. It's a lot of fun!

10:07 a.m.
It's Caitlin again. Things are crazy in the control room today, since I'm learning the graphics. Luckily Matt and Dawn are helping when they aren't directing and switching. Lauren has been great helping with guests today too. As for on the set, Kim really got a kick out of Dave Summers' package on food prices. She was laughing hysterically on the set.

9:40 a.m.
Hey everyone! It's Lauren, the intern. I snapped some shots of our guests in the green room before the show. I got a chance to talk to some of them and they said they were nervous, but excited. I'm sitting in the control room now, and will keep updating you on our behind-the-scene stuff during the show!

9:37 a.m
It's Caitlin again. All the producers are also learning to run our graphics system during the show. So while I am timing the show, I'm also making sure the right graphics get on the air.

9:28 a.m.
It's Matt. We're actually in the process of learning to call and switch our own shows as TD/Directors. For the next half hour, Dawn with be doing both jobs. Starting at 10 a.m. I will be doing both. If you aren't sure what that means, and would like to know, drop me an email at mbabb@wkyc.com or weekendmorningshow@wkyc.com and I'll be happy to explain it.

8:54 a.m.
Good morning everyone! This is Caitlin, your producer. I hope you are having a great Saturday morning. We've got a packed show, yet again. We're live at the rib fest and we'll have some special behind the scenes video of our three guests for today's show.

Notes from the Desk

Hello Everyone! It's Julie, I'm on the Assignment Desk before, during and after the show keeping everyone, especially Producer Caitlin updated as to what's going on! If we have something breaking, she is usually the first person I tell so she is sure to have time in her show to tell all of you!

I also keep an ear on the scanners, read through all the papers and keep track of our crews, making sure they get to where they have to go!

While the show is on the air, I always try to listen and keep an ear on whats going on and what Jeff and Kim are talking about. I get viewer phone calls during the show, especially when we have a cute dog up for adoption or when Jeff and Kim ask each other questions and don't know the answer. Plus, there are always calls for the answer to Bruce's Trivia Question, and I'm sorry to say I don't ever have the answer to that one! I'd be glad to guess right along with you though!

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend! We'll see you next week! Go Cavs!!

Show Blog: Sunday, May 18th

10:27 a.m.
Congrats to Matt, he got the trivia question right! Join us again next week! We'll see you then.

10:16 a.m.
A change of pace this week, Between the Lines is live! With all the political news going on this week, the Marc Dann scandal and Pat O'Malley resigning, Tom was very busy this week. So we didn't have a chance tape the show, because Tom was out of the station out on stories. Jeff and Kim, and all of us in the control like having the show live. It worked out well this morning and was a nice twist for us.

10 a.m.
So our live shot with at HorseFest was a success. Just before our first hit, the picture kept going to black. It would sit in black for a few seconds then come back. So I was a little worried that we wouldn't have it, or we would lose the signal mid-hit. There was a little static in the anchors and guests ear pieces, but it was still a success. Just in case the signal went down, I had some other stories standing by to fill the extra time.

9:56 a.m.
Jeff and Kim are taking viewer emails again this morning. As always they are still getting the hang of using the laptops on the set. Jeff said it on air, but he gives a lot of thanks to our floor director Jess, who always is there to help him get the emails at the desk.

9:23 a.m.
Hi everyone! We've got our first winner for the Kenny Chesney tickets. Congratulations to Cheryl Riddenbaugh of Windham. We've got one more set of tickets to give away so stay tuned.

8:56 am.
Good Morning. We're hoping to be live from "Horsefest" but as of now, the location in the woods is playing games with our signal. We hope to bring it to you in today's how. Fingers crossed, here we go!

Starr Sightings: Inside Studio A - "Before the show"

My day started a little earlier than normal for a Sunday. My shift starts at 6:45 on weekends, but today is the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon so I got here at 6:15 to make sure I got into the parking lot. The runners go right past WKYC. Best of luck to them. It's great that there is such a wonderful turnout even though it is raining and a bit chilly.
Most of us got here early and set up the studio. With all of the breaking political news this week, Tom Beres will be live with his weekly Between the Lines segment.
The laptops are set up and ready to go for Kim and Jeff. We'll be taking viewer emails about Game 7 for the Cavs and the anchors will read some on the air... so send them in!
Enjoy the show. I'll keep you posted if anything happens in the studio! It should be a busy morning.
Stay tuned,
Jess Starr

Show Blog: Saturday, May 17th

10:28 a.m.
Thanks for joining us today! If you can get out to NASA Glenn today, they have a lot of great exhibits to check out. And if you didn't win Kenny Chesney tickets this morning, check back with us tomorrow, we're giving away two more sets on the morning show.

10:10 a.m.
We had a story in this first block in the 10:00 half hour about a theater production in Geauga County. This was Jeff's story idea. He went and saw the production with his wife and took some pictures. He brought the pictures in with him this morning, but we didn't have anyone here to put them into our video system. So Dawn was able to take stills of the pictures from the control room and mount them on the background. When the story aired, Dawn ran the stills from the control room also. Check the blog later today to see the video of her making the stills and airing them.

9:50 a.m.
Bruce is doing his big weather forecast again. He gave a little shoutout to our latest blog contributor, Mike O'Mara! He's out on his boat today and he's giving us updates about how the water is today!

9:36 a.m.
It's Matt. We just hit the break before sports, and so far things are going pretty smooth in the control room. We shot a little behind the scenes video of Caitlin and our new intern, Lauren, who just joined us today, getting our next guest, Fantashia Stevens, and taking her into the studio. We'll post that video after the show. You can see that segment coming up in just a few minutes on Channel 3 News.

video

9:24 a.m.
Things are extra busy in the control room today because we are taking callers for the ticket giveaway, so I have to man the phones today. Luckily, Lauren our new Channel 3 intern is here and ready to help! Check back to the blog later, we've got some behind the scenes video about how we take calls in the control room that we will post.

video

8:59 a.m.
Good morning, everyone! It's Caitlin, your producer. We've got a packed show again today, and we're giving away Kenny Chesney tickets so stay tuned throughout the show to win!

8:52 a.m.
Good Morning! It's Matt. We're just about ready to get going here. Our live shot from NASA is tuned in and ready to go. Anchors are getting mic'd up as I type. The crew is all set... I hope. See you at 9am!

Kim's Promo for Saturday, May 17th

OK, so the promo is a little dark. That is definitely Kim Wheeler and Jess Starr that you see, or don't see, but keep in mind it's early in the morning for us too. We like to keep the control room nice and dark until it's show time, and even then we don't like it too much brighter. We call it our control room "mood" lighting. Anyhow, here's what is coming up on today's show.

Happy Mother's Day! Sunday, May 11th

10:30 a.m.
Happy Mother's Day to all. I hope you enjoyed the show this morning. We had fun showing pictures of our moms. If you missed them, you can see them here on the blog just below where you are reading now. Also coming up on the blog, we'll try to add some more of you emails of how you will be spending Mother's Day with your mom. Also, Jeff will share with you a behind the scenes look at last night's Rock Hall Benefit, and our producer Caitlin will share a look behind the scenes at how today's show was put together, starting with when she walked in to an empty newsroom early, early this morning.

Check back often, and tell your friends about the new Weekend Morning Show Blog here on WKYC.com.

Matt, Director

10:25 a.m.
Make sure you check back later today. We're going to put a nice little behind the scenes segment that I taped overnight. You'll get to see what I do to prepare the show.

10:17 a.m.
Hey everyone. A funny story to share from the control room here. Another thing I do while we are on the air, if I have time, is start to put together the noon show. So today, I started to put together the noon show, only to remember we DON'T have a noon show today! I've known it for days but I just completely forgot during the show! Director Matt was making fun of me, and asked how long I had been working on it. Fortunately, I only put in a few stories and had only spent a few minutes, but even still. Now you can see, all this busy work, makes me forget that I'm off early today!

10:10 a.m.
It's Caitlin again. Thanks to Matt for helping me with the blog today. I've been going back and forth trying to add these graphics. Anyway, we've been showing pictures from the crew and Jeff and Kim of all of us with our mother's, or in Kim's case her with her kids. All the pictures are posted on the blog too.

10:07 a.m.
It's Matt, the director. With Del's piece on the air, I finally have a chance to contribute to today's show blog. Keep sending in those Mother's Day emails, and we will post some of the ones that don't get on the air right here on the blog.

9:54 a.m.
I have to apologize to our blog watchers today. I have been very busy in the booth today. I've been reading emails and trying to put in graphics for our viewer emails segments. Plus, I have to get the guests and bring them out to the studio. I know, no excuses, but it just has been busy. But the viewer emails are coming up next!

8:58 a.m.
Happy Mother's Day! We're getting ready to go. Today we are taking viewer emails and asking people to tell us what they are doing with their moms for Mother's Day. Jeff and Kim will read some of them on air.
