AKRON, Ohio — 500 people attended a sold out gala Saturday night celebrating the 100th anniversary of Akron's NAACP chapter.

Those at the event enjoyed an evening of fun, food, and a powerful speech by keynote speaker Rev. Dr. William Barber II. His message? "When you’re surrounded by lies, rely on the truth." Barber said that message applied to all areas of life as a way to stand firm and lead the way to justice, fairness and equality.

The Akron NAACP was founded in 1918 by a racially diverse group of people working together to promote racial justice. 3News' Romney Smith had the honor of emceeing the event.
