WATCH | 'Minister of Culture' Michael Heaton's spring movie preview

Several notable films will be making their way to theaters over the next few months.

Mar. 15: Us 

Directed by Jordan Peel, starring Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Elisabeth Moss.

A family on vacation makes a creepy discovery after a day at the beach. Someone is in their cottage. They are not sure who, or are they? A horror film along the line’s of Peele’s “Get Out.” Described with one word: “disturbing.”

Mar. 15: Captive State

Directed by Rupert Wyatt of Rise of the Planet of the Apes fame, starring John Goodman Vera Farmiga and KiKi Layne. Dystopian thriller.

As the film opens in a future version Chicago, aliens have already been on earth for 10 years. Some humans are collaborating in hopes of winning favor with the overlords, while others have formed a fierce resistance movement. This moody and atmospheric film provides a scenario all too real. This is a riveting suspense thriller.

Mar. 15: Dumbo

Directed by Tim Burton, starring Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell and Michael Keaton.

A live action quasi-remake that begins where the Disney animated film ends: with a flying elephant. Tim Burton creates a magical and charming circus world that makes you never want to leave.

Apr. 5: Pet Sematary 

Directed by Kevin Kolsch, starring Jason Clarke and John Lithgow.

A remake of the Stephen King horror novel about a family who moves to a house in the country only to find their world dominated by the dead animals who occupy a small patch of grass out back.

Apr. 5: Shazam!

Directed by David F. Sandberg, starring Ashe Angel and Zachary Levi.

A young boy discovers that he has the power to transform himself into the super hero of the title. Can he fly? Does have he have X-Ray vision? Can he become invisible? If the answer is yes, how will he change the world?

Apr. 5: Hellboy

Directed by Guillermo del Toro, starring Ron Perlman and Milla Jovovich.

This reboot is described as a graphic monster horror meets sarcastic, deadpan humor. Roll over, Deadpool. There’s a new sheriff in town, nd his name is Hellboy.

Apr. 12: Missing Link 

Directed by Chris Butler, starring Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, and Zach Galifianakis

A stop animation story similar to King Kong but with more family friendly fun poured into the mix. The legendary Missing Link of the title is captured and brought back to civilization. But can he be civilized, or will he civilize us?

Apr. 26: Avengers: Endgame

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, starring Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo.

This is the three-hour mash-up of 22 related Marvel Comic movies all rolled into one, actually rolled into one three-hour marathon movie. Better pack a lunch for this one, because it’s going to be a long, wild ride. You’ll also need a program to keep the players straight. Props to our local boy directors the Russo brothers for sorting this all out.
