Cleveland mom behind Literacy in the H.O.O.D. gets special surprise on ‘Kelly Clarkson Show’

'Literacy in the H.O.O.D. (Helping Out Our Disenfranchised) is dedicated to helping build a culture of reading in Cleveland’s low-income neighborhoods'

CLEVELAND — Cleveland mom Chrishawndra Matthews is being featured on The Kelly Clarkson Show during Wednesday’s episode (March 2) to discuss her nonprofit Literacy in the H.O.O.D. program.

“Chrishawndra says she's now able to reach even more families and provide bookshelves so that every child can build their own home library,” according to Clarkson’s team. “She has big plans to raise money for a building so she can help parents, children and caregivers in Cleveland become stronger readers.”

We’re told Clarkson has a special surprise for Matthews during her Wednesday morning appearance… It’s $10,000 courtesy of Scholastic and Clarkson herself.

It’s her second time on Clarkson’s show. During her first appearance last year, Matthews received $5,000 and a van.

"Literacy in the H.O.O.D. (Helping Out Our Disenfranchised) is dedicated to helping build a culture of reading in Cleveland’s low-income neighborhoods," according to the organization's site. "Our organization takes a two-generation approach to promote literacy while distributing hundreds of books at schools and community events. Understanding the value of being an insider in communities of need, the organization regularly attends food distributions and other assistance programs to hand out books to families and engage parents. Through this painstaking work, Literacy in the H.O.O.D. develops trust and explains to parents they can help their children thwart the school-to-prison pipeline and the urban achievement gap by helping them become confident readers."

The Kelly Clarkson Show airs weekday mornings on WKYC at 11 a.m.
