Al Roker celebrates 'legendary career' of Kerry Sanders amid retirement: 'I’m really kind of choked up about this'

'Kerry is such a special guy. I’ve covered storms with him. I just love the guy.'

NEW YORK — It's the end of an era.

After a legendary career spanning 32 years, Kerry Sanders is retiring from NBC News.

Before the TODAY show paid tribute to Sanders during their Tuesday broadcast, our friend Al Roker joined us on the GO! morning show to pay tribute.

“I’m really kind of choked up about this," Roker said about Sanders and his retirement. "Kerry is such a special guy. I’ve covered storms with him. I just love the guy.”

"You have brightened our mornings for 32 years -- thank you Kerry Sanders!" the TODAY show tweeted with a video highlighting some of his biggest career moments.

Roker, who is a weekly staple on WKYC, made his return to GO! on Jan. 10 for the first time since he was hospitalized late last year.

“I heard from so many people in Cleveland, so thanks guys," Roker said upon his return with us. "I really appreciate it.”
