Joe Steele & Lisa Jones Gentry - The True Love Story behind “Forbidden Love”

“FORBIDDEN LOVE will resonate with anyone who has been touched by adoption and anyone who has refused to let society define who they can love.”

“Forbidden Love” is a book that tells the true story of a couple who fell in love and had a child in the segregated ‘50s. To share a preview of this story and to tell you about the book, Joe Steele and the Author of "Forbidden Love,” Lisa Jones Gentry, sat down with Alexa and Michael.

Here are the questions Alexa & Michael asked:
Can you tell us about your new memoir, written by Lisa Jones Gentry, FORBIDDEN LOVE?
What inspired you to locate your birth family and ultimately share your story?
I understand you wrote the novel, A Dead Man Speaks, which garnered an NAACP Image Award and Literary Critics Award nomination. How did you connect with Joe to write FORBIDDEN LOVE?
What brings you to Cleveland? (Answer: Grau family meeting on April 6 and a book signing at Loganberry books on April 7. Joe Steele was contacted by his birth father’s family, the Grau’s. They heard about “Forbidden Love” and they wanted to meet Joe. Joe and Lisa can talk about how the meeting went
You had a very happy adopted family, how did it feel to find out about your new family the Grau's?
How did the Grau's find out about Forbidden Love? What was your first reaction when you heard from them?
What did it feel like for you to be able to meet the grand-nieces and grand-nephews of Father Grau, whose love story with Sophie is the focus of the book?
When you wrote the book, you didn't have the benefit of meeting either Sophie or Father Grau, because they are both deceased, now that you've met some of Father's Grau's family, is there anything that you would add to the book?
What do you hope readers will take away from this story?
