Takeaways from Cleveland Browns loss to L.A. Chargers: The Donovan Live Postgame Show

Jim Donovan recaps his interview with Mayor Frank Jackson and gives his takeaways from the Browns' loss to the Chargers alongside Dave "Dino" DeNatale

Before we get to the Browns and the aftermath of Sunday's loss to the Chargers, Jimmy was busy on Tuesday at Cleveland City Hall.

Fresh off of his 'State of the City Address' last week, Mayor Frank Jackson sat down for a one-on-one interview with Jimmy to talk about a whole host of topics. Among them:

  • Why Cleveland is a success, but not a great city yet
  • The continuing problem of homicides in the city
  • Education
  • Revitalizing neighborhoods
  • Will big-ticket events come back to Cleveland following recent successes?

To the Browns

I was out on Monday evening so Tuesday was the first chance I had to talk to Jimmy about the Browns' 38-14 loss to the Chargers on Sunday.

I have no problem that the Browns lost to Los Angeles, who I think is a pretty darn good football team. My problem is that the team looked unprepared and didn't execute the little things well at all. They dropped/missed passes, didn't hold containment on defense, played spotty special teams coverage, and didn't take advantage of great field position.

The wide receiver position is a problem right now. Rashard Higgins is sidelined with a sprained MCL, Derrick Willies just had surgery on a broken collarbone and is on injured reserve, Rod Streater is done for the year with a broken neck.

So that leaves the team with Jarvis Landry playing alongside rookies Antonio Callaway, Damion Ratley, and Da’Mari Scott. The Browns signed Breshad Perriman last weekend in hopes that the former first-round pick of the Ravens can rejuvenate his career here.

The NFL's trading deadline is still two weeks away so one might expect rumblings of a possible Amari Cooper-to-Cleveland deal. However, it's difficult to imagine that Browns GM John Dorsey would part with a first-round pick, which is believed to be Oakland's asking price.
