Tri-C’s virtual Martin Luther King Celebration

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration hosted by Cuyahoga Community College is a tradition that dates back to 1977.

CLEVELAND — On Jan. 18, WKYC Studios will stream Cuyahoga Community College's annual event honoring the life and legacy of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

“The 44th Annual Celebration of the Life and Work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” will be a virtual experience, featuring an array of musical performances, scholarship presentations and student speeches honoring Dr. King.

Musical groups set to perform include the Tri-C Vocal Arts Youth Choir, The Cleveland Orchestra’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Chorus, the Tri-C Orchestra, and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra in residence at the College.

In addition to musical performances, a dozen Tri-C students will be awarded scholarships from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Scholarship Fund.

Students from Tri-C’s Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Scholars Academy will also present their outlook on a statement inspired by a Dr. King sermon in 1965 which followed the attacks on protestors in Selma, Alabama. That statement is Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

The event will be streamed at 3:30 pm on Monday, Jan. 18 on wkyc.com and on our Facebook page. It will run approximately 50 minutes.
