Cleveland — Many of us are preparing to shop Black Friday. But with all of the ads and emails claiming to have the best sales, where to shop and when to shop can be confusing.
Even with sites like BestBlackFriday.Com, which puts all of the deals in one place, bless the people who have time to go through them all.
But thank goodness we have Matt Granite, aka The Deal Guy, to sort through it. And he says: Hold your horses before you run to the stores on Friday.
First, there are some things you want to wait until Cyber Monday to buy. Each buying bonanza day serves up different savings.
"You wouldn't buy your grill Memorial Day, because you can get a better discount 4th of July. The same rule applies to Black Friday versus Cyber Monday"
Matt says Black Friday is better for appliances, gaming, laptops and TVs.
Although he says buy those TV's online, before or after Black Friday. The discounts are deeper and you’ll get a better quality TV.
Some specific deals he likes:
- A recertified iPad Air WiFi. It originally lists for $349.99 but is selling for $199.99. That’s more than 40% off.
- iDeaUSA noise cancelling Headphones which are 50% off. Their original price is listed as $199.99. He found them for $99.99.
- The Livebox Cord Cutting Utility Box for 40% off. It usually sells for $149.99. Matt found it for $79.99.
But retail analysts, like Sara Skirball from the savings site RetailMeNot say "Always find a coupon code, find a cash back offer. Never check out, especially over Cyber Weekend, without a free shipping code."
And speaking of Cyber Monday, Matt says the deals that are better that day are soft goods, like pillows, weighted blankets, and those so called “Storewide Sales”.
"Typically if you were to see a sale of up to 30% off at Banana Republic on Black Friday, it’s up to 40% on Cyber Monday," he told us.
But no matter which day you shop, a secret way to save money is to buy a discounted gift card from one of the many sites that sell them.
Tae Bodge, of Gift Card Granny explains, "If you find a Kohl’s gift card that's 14% off, you automatically save yourself 14% when you shop with that card.”
Still, Matt says his sales blow away the advertised deals, because he finds them before they get to the stores.
"I uncover the websites from the direct source (distributors) rather than going through a middleman (like the retailers)."
And scouring savings is what he does best.
