Bark Week: What kind of dog do you have? We put doggie DNA to the test

Do doggie DNA tests really work?

CLEVELAND — Just like ancestry DNA tests for humans, our four-legged friends are also discovering their roots.

We tested two adopted dogs with a DNA kit. One of the dogs is obviously a mixed breed. But the other is supposed to be a purebred.

The first dog is owned by Sara Ybema, a vet tech who adopted Winnie from the Humane Society.

"So, Winnifred’s full name is Winnifred Bernice Picklebottom,” Ybema said.

Winnie is 3-years-old and given her brindle color, short legs, and big ears, Ybema can only guess her mix. "What made this happen? She’s like the cutest thing I've ever come across." It's a question Sarah gets all the time. "The first question out of everybody's mouth is what is she? I don't have an answer for them."

Sara guesses Winnie may have some dachshund and maybe miniature pinscher in her. But she's not sure.

We wanted to help solve that mystery. We asked dog genetics company, Embark, for help. After a quick swab of Winnie's mouth, we sent in a sample of her DNA.

Embark is just one of many dog genetic companies on the market. Prices for kits and services range from about $90 up to $400. Not cheap, but some vets say the information can help.

"If the point is to let you know what breed or breeds your dog is, and that is good as vets to know because certain dogs are predisposed to certain genetic conditions. So it may help us know that your pet may be predisposed to a certain heart condition or skin condition," said veterinarian Jeannette Bimonte.

The test kits are not just for mixed breeds, but purebreds as well.

For example, we met Tucker, who is a Shetland sheepdog. But Tucker, who was adopted, does have a few characteristics, that differ from the average sheltie - such as a longer nose, and longer legs.

Embark tests for over 250 breeds and 160 genetic health conditions. In Tucker's case, his results show he is a carrier for one genetic condition and he is also 100% Shetland sheepdog. No mix here.

Over at the Ybema house, it's a different story. Results are in and Winnie is a carrier for 2 genetic conditions.

  • 25.4% American Bully
  • 24.6% American Staffordshire Terrier
  • 15.2% Chihuahua
  • 13% American Cattle Dog

“Oh, that's where the ears come from," said Ybema. “She’s my pittie-chihuahua. We’ll call her a pittie-huahua!”

Not all Dog DNA companies are created equal. Check the number of breeds and genetic conditions they test.

Also, read reviews before ordering. There are a number of highly rated test kits -- and those that fall below the mark.
