City Dogs Cleveland kennel is full; you can adopt a furry friend for $21 from now until Feb. 28

Normally, the kennel's limit is 155 dogs. Right now, they are caring for 175.

CLEVELAND — The return to post-pandemic life has been hard on animal shelters nationwide. Here at home, City Dogs Cleveland tells us they have been operating at max capacity.

The steady influx of dogs arriving at the kennel has been much faster than they are being adopted. To make as much room as possible, the kennel has to house dogs in temporary cages. Some of those cages are within the hallways.

Cory Keller, manager of animal and control services, say the kennel's limit is 155. Right now, they are caring for 175 dogs.

Full animal shelters has been a nationwide issue which peaked during the pandemic. Here locally, the overflow has become an even bigger problem.

"We're seeing an uptick of stray dogs running loose," Keller explained. "We've also seen a lot of dogs are being abandoned. When I talk to owners, they say the cost of food is a lot higher now. They can't get into a vet because of certain medical issues and they don't know what to do."

Meanwhile, City Dogs Cleveland is working with rescue and shelter partners, but say they need the community's help in not only reuniting pets with their owners, but also finding these furry four-legged friends a forever home.

Ultimately, the goal here is to get owners to come forward and claim your dog. We also want new adopters to come in. We're happy to meet with you and try to find the best buddy for your lifestyle and your home," Keller adds.

City Dogs Cleveland is currently holding its "21 Dog Challenge" adoption promotion. From now through Feb. 28, it costs just $21 to adopt a furry friend. That cost includes the dog license, microchip, updated vaccines, and spay & neuter. Check out more information below.
