AVON, Ohio — A golden retriever is safe after being rescued from and icy pond on Monday.

Avon Police responded to Veterans Park in Avon just before 2:30 p.m. for reports of the dog in the pond. At the scene, officers observed the dog trying to get out of the water, but was unsuccessful as the thin ice continued to break beneath him.

According to dispatch, the fire department was in route to the scene to assist in the rescue.

After watching the dogs efforts for approximately a minute, an officer began removing his shoes and sock in an attempt to go in after the dog. However, at the same time, the fire department arrived.

Suiting up in ice commander suits, two fire fighters entered the pond to rescue the golden retriever who was approximately 15 feet from the shore.

The dog was covered in blankets and taken to the fire engine to warm up and dry off.

The dog was then reunited with its owners.
