AKRON, Ohio — Officials from Akron-based One of a Kind Pet Rescue are heading south this weekend for a major undertaking to save more than 45 dogs in need.

And they need your help.

Staff and volunteers are going to rural Ohio to rescue the canines from a severe hoarding situation. They could use everything from large bath towels and blankets, to laundry soap, paper towels, and Clorox wipes.

According to One of a Kind Pet Rescue's Facebook post, a Good Samaritan in southern Ohio was taking in stray dogs, but soon found himself unable to logistically and financially care for them.

Some of the dogs contracted sarcoptic mange and infected all of the dogs in his care.

"Imagine the worst bug bite you've ever received; you itch it, you scratch it, and soon you've got an open sore," described the Facebook post.  "Multiply this by 200 and that is what these dogs are experiencing."

The good news is sarcoptic mange is treatable. Officials at One of a Kind Pet Rescue say it will take expensive medicine, medicated baths, and high-quality nutritional supplements to help heal the dogs.

The shelter caring for the dogs in southern Ohio lacks the budget, staff, or infrastructure to handle so many sick dogs at one time, so they put out an appeal to the whole state. One of A Kind Pet Rescue was the first to respond.

15 dogs arrived in Akron earlier this week and housing has been constructed to take care of all of the dogs as they are treated, while keeping them away from the other pets at the facility.

Once the dogs are healthy, they will be made available for adoption.
