The animals received vaccinations from the staff at the shelter and were also spayed and neutered, if necessary.

With Hurricane Michael battering the Gulf Coast, it can be especially painful for pets, who are often left behind by owners who have no room for them as they evacuate. However, one local animal shelter is pitching in to help out.

The Northeast Ohio SPCA of Parma accepted 36 pets from Albany, Georgia Wednesday who were affected by the hurricane. They were taken in from the Albany Humane Society, which was left partially damaged by the storm and is still without electricity.

The animals received vaccinations from the staff at the shelter and were also spayed and neutered, if necessary. None will be euthanized, per Northeast Ohio SPCA policies.

"We were able to rescue about 40 animals that were in the path of Hurricane Florence. All of those animals have already been adopted into forever homes, which is a great feeling," Executive Director Jeff Kocian said in a statement. "We are excited to provide a safe haven for even more animals affected by Hurricane Michael and hope to find them families of their own just as quickly."

It is unknown at this time when the pets will be available for adoption.
