ROXY'S MAILBAG | We get your questions answered: When is it OK to pet a service dog?

If you have questions about Roxy and her training process, e-mail us at 3LovesPets@wkyc.com.

CLEVELAND — We are getting so many questions about Roxy, our Wags 4 Warriors service puppy in training. Keep sending them in!

Here are two that we received recently…

Question: I see service dogs out all the time. Is it ever OK to ask if you can pet them?

Kayla DeLorenzo, Roxy’s Handler: When you are out and about, when you ask to say "hi" to a service dog, it’s up to the handler to release them to say "hi." They can say "no," and don’t get offended by that. It’s just that they are working.

Question: What if you see a service dog without its handler?

DeLorenzo: If you see a service dog just walking around, it has a vest on and no leash, and it has no handler, you should definitely follow the dog because that means something is wrong with the handler. They might be having a seizure or something else is wrong. You should definitely follow the dog and it will bring you back to its handler. They are trained to do this.

Roxy is getting out quite a bit, making trips to Target, Home Depot and Starbucks for her treat: A puppuccino. DeLorenzo says Roxy gets recognized quite frequently, and it’s a good opportunity to help educate the public on how to treat service animals.

We will see Roxy again next Tuesday morning. Until then, if you have questions for DeLorenzo or have a #3LovesPets story, e-mail us at 3LovesPets@wkyc.com.
