GIFT IDEA: Gleena Porcelain Products from Still Point Gallery in Cleveland Heights.

Still Point Gallery and Boutique had its origin in early 2009 when Kate Baker opened a small space on the 2nd floor mezzanine of the Old Schoolhouse in Little Italy. Her idea was to showcase her husband, Geoff’s photography, drawing on her own retail and merchandizing career to curate and manage the business. After upsizing to various suites at the Schoolhouse the gallery relocated to the historic Cedar Fairmount District in early  2018 where it’s been for five years.

Kate has worked hard to create a gallery that presents a wide array of artists (painters, photographers, jewelers, clothing designers, sculptors, carvers, glassmakers, and ceramicists) and their original or limited edition works.  One of our principal goals has been to create a “space” that is its own work of art; one that generates interest and energy and one that contributes to an overall aesthetic.

Geoff’s fine art landscape photography has been featured through solo shows at the Butler Institute of Art in Youngstown, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, Trinity Commons and the Western Reserve Land Conservancy as well as other arts venues including the Holden Arboretum where he was the organization’s annual artist in 2014. This week (Dec. 8) he released his third book, “still point … there the dance Is”, a compilation of favorite images of NE Ohio and NW Michigan accompanied by his essays for each.  The piece is produced as an “Art” book in a highly limited edition of 150 and is available for purchase at the gallery.

Gleena is slip-cast porcelain, handcrafted in Cleveland, glazed with food safe glazes, please hand wash, microwave is not recommended.

GIFT IDEA: Toys from S'il Vous Play, a toy store in Cleveland Heights.

In 2013, Mariah and Wes Roj were on their babymoon when they wandered into a charming toy shop in the French Caribbean that forever changed the way they perceived toys and the role of toys in a child’s life. The kind of toy shop they found themselves in had once existed in the States, but over time, and especially recently, they were vanishing. The European toys they saw now seemed to step out of a different time, especially in comparison to the mass-manufactured plastic offerings that line the shelves of toy aisles in American big-box stores. Instead of overt branding, buzzing and batteries, the toys’ magic was sourced from their beauty, quality, and simplicity.

Every time that Mariah and her husband passed the historic Cleveland Heights firehouse building in the Cedar-Lee district, they admired its Tudor architecture, and antique flourishes. Over time, the building became a central component of the S’il Vous Play daydream.

Mariah and Wes are thrilled to bring this toy shop to life in Cleveland Heights – the first of its kind – introducing families to brands from across the globe and helping them to choose the toys that encourage meaningful play. Each item at S’il Vous Play is carefully selected by the Rojs based on the values they share: made-to-last characteristics, location of design and manufacturing, ethical labor practices, and sustainability of materials. Their goal is to find toys that encourage open-ended and immersive play. With the right toys, children will play longer, cherish deeper, and imagine bigger.

GIFT IDEA: Bags and leather goods from FOUNT, which has stores in Crocker Park and Pinecrest.

FOUNT was founded in 2014 by husband and wife creative team Phillip and Jackie Wachter,  and born out of their desire to craft beautiful and lasting leather bags. FOUNT uses ethically sourced leather and materials available to craft classic American heritage goods that can be carried by your side for years to come.

The word FOUNT is a noun that means “an abundant source of desirable quality." Philip and Jackie first heard the word in a cover of the old church hymn “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” and loved the way it sounded. The definition solidified the word as the perfect name for their company as they wanted to be sure quality was at the forefront of all of their designs.

FOUNT uses full-grain Italian leather for the majority of its products. Utilizing British hides that are a byproduct of the food industry, FOUNT partnered with an Italian tannery founded in 1865 to choose the weight, colors, and characteristics that comprise our signature leather. By utilizing hides from the meat industry, we help to cut down on massive amounts of waste and keep leather hides out of landfills.

FOUNT bags are designed with intention in Cleveland, OH and handcrafted by skilled artisans in Ohio, the Dominican Republic and Leon, Mexico. Their team works in collaboration with Fair Trade consultants and partner craftsmen on a weekly basis to ensure exceptional product quality, fair labor practices, and livable wages.
