Shopping for jeans is a task that many people would rather avoid. Between keeping up with new trends, and finding styles that flatter your figure, buying denim can be one of the biggest fashion challenges out there.
WKYC's Sara Shookman met up with Stylist & Image Consultant Natalia Martinez at Haven in Chagrin Falls for some tips and tricks that prove this year's denim trends can be flattering on any body type.
THE FIRST TREND: STRAIGHT-LEG
Straight-leg jeans are a classic style making a major comeback right now. Less tapered than skinny jeans, many current options also feature a higher waist.
Natalia says to cuff or hem straight-leg jeans to hit right at your ankle bone, which will help visually elongate your leg. Another great tip? Look for simple and streamlined pockets if you don't want to call attention to your hips.
"Less is more," says Natalia.
THE SECOND TREND: CROPPED FLARES
Cropped flares just might be the biggest denim trend of 2019. They boast a universally flattering shape, and the built-in stretch also makes them one of the most comfortable options out there.
Pair your cropped flares with a cropped top to accentuate your waist, and Natalia loves to pair lighter washes with lighter shoes and darker washes with darker shoes, and says monochromatic color matching helps "elongate the figure and slim it out."
THE THIRD TREND: SKINNY JEANS
Yes, skinny jeans are still in style! Natalia says they're a "great basic to have in your closet and I think [there are ways] you can style it to make it fresh again."
Dark washes are always a flattering choice, and when it comes to length, Natalia says "one or two ruches [around your ankle] looks good, but if you have more and it looks bulky, I would definitely have them hemmed."
A final cool styling tip - pair your skinny jeans with a flowy top and try a "demi-tuck" where you only tuck in the front part of your top and let the rest just flow.
And don't worry if you find shopping for jeans frustrating - you're not alone. Natalia says to just keep trying.
"Try different brands, different colors, we're all very unique and have different bodies and there's something out there for everybody," she says.
