Tired? Sleep deprived? How you can get a better night's sleep

6 tips on getting to sleep quicker and waking up more refreshed.

Today is "National Public Sleep Day" where you're encouraged to take a nap outside, or in any public place.

But let's be real, it's February in Northeast Ohio and it's cold outside. So here are tips on how you can get a better night's sleep.

1. Power down an hour before bed. Dim the lights, turn off all electronic devices and don't busy yourself with tasks that can be taken care of in the morning.

2. Avoid drinking too many liquids close to bedtime. Alcohol can make it easier to fall asleep, but when the buzz wears off you're more likely to wake up later. Also, stop drinking water a few hours before bed to avoid multiple bathroom runs.

3. Switch up the color in your room. The color of paint used in your room can impact your sleep. Experts say it doesn't necessarily matter the color just as long as it is a soothing color like a light blue or even a light yellow. Also, it's important to use matte paint and not high gloss paint.

4. Cool your mind. Try yoga, prayer or even meditation to calm yourself before bed. Headspace and Calm are great apps to try!

5. Get out of bed if you really can't sleep! Continuing to lay in bed only stresses us out more. Get up and do something relaxing to take your mind off sleep.

6. Resist the urge to hit the snooze. The snooze often disrupts REM sleep. Those few extra minutes of sleep might feel like a necessity in the moment but can make us wake up feeling even groggier.
