Walmart unveils pickup tower in Steelyard Commons

Customers can receive their online orders in less than a minute

Picking up online orders just got much easier at Walmart's Steelyard Commons location.

On Monday, the retail giant unveiled its Pickup Tower technology. The 16-foot tall structure functions like a giant vending machine and can fulfill a customer's online order in less than a minute.

"During this holiday season we are seeing more than ever before how technology is enabling customers to not only save money but to save time,” said Walmart Store Manager Stacy Payne. “Walmart is proud to offer innovations like the Pickup Tower to meet our customers’ needs whether they are shopping in person or ordering thru a smartphone app.”

To use the tower, the customer makes an order on Walmart.com and selects the pickup option at checkout. When the item arrives at the store it is loaded into the tower and customers retrieve it by scanning a bar code sent to their mobile device.

The tower is part of Walmart's $94 million dollar plans to remodel 27 of its Ohio locations over the next year.
