Giant Eagle to pay $10 million in bonuses to team members

The supermarket chain is awarding new and current employees working during the coronavirus pandemic.

PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle announced Saturday it will pay $10 million in bonuses to supermarket, pharmacy and convenience store employees across the country who continue to work during the coronavirus pandemic.

Employees at Giant Eagle, Market District, Giant Eagle Pharmacy and GetGo as well as warehouse and delivery workers will benefit from the bonus pay, which starts immediately and is retroactive to Sunday, March 15.

"As a company, we must continue to find way to support our incredibly dedicated Team Members," Giant Eagle President and CEO Laura Shapira Karet said in a press release. "Across all our communities every day, they are working tirelessly to keep families safe, healthy and fed. We cannot thank them enough. They are our heroes."

The bonus period is scheduled to end on Saturday, May 2, but will be reevaluated in the coming weeks based on community needs. Giant Eagle also said new employees will be included in the bonus pay distribution.
