101 days away from sports gaming in Ohio: Who is approved and where will you be able to place wagers?

3News has learned that the Browns, Guardians and the Cavaliers have been approved to host in-person sportsbooks.

CLEVELAND — In just over 100 days, Ohioans will be eligible for sports gaming.

"This is the largest expansion of gaming in Ohio's history," said Jessica Franks, director of communications for the Ohio Casino Control Commission.

Franks told 3News that the Ohio Casino Control Commission also believes this is the largest simultaneous launch in the U.S. On Jan. 1, 2023, Ohioans will be able to place wagers on sports.

In the meantime, businesses are busy applying for licenses to participate. There are three types of licenses defined by the Ohio Casino Control Commission.

  • Type A: Online or mobile device
  • Type B: In-person sportsbook
  • Type C: Kiosk

3News has learned that the Browns, Cavaliers, and Guardians have been approved for "A" and "B."

"The patrons will be able to place a bet either online or at that retail sportsbook location," said Franks, who told 3News  more than 800 locations across the state have been approved for type "C." ""Those are going to be at kiosks that folks might see at bars, restaurants and certain other businesses that have the appropriate liquor permits."

According to Franks, businesses must abide by specific rules and regulations to remain eligible to provide sports gaming.

"We understand that Ohioans are excited about the prospect of sports gaming," she explained, "but we want to make sure that for those that do so responsibly."
