1 dead after elderly driver hits pedestrians, crashes into Mentor Walmart

The cause of the crash is unknown.

MENTOR -- One woman was killed when she was struck by a car driven by an elderly woman outside the Mentor Walmart Monday afternoon.

According to a spokesperson for the Mentor Fire Department, the driver of the car struck two pedestrians in front of the Mentor Avenue Walmart, then struck the building.

It all happened just inches away from Mike and Rita Kaprosy, a Mentor couple that have been married for 54 years.

"I kept saying, 'My God, I'm still alive'," Rita says.

A city of Mentor spokesperson says one of the pedestrians went into full cardiac arrest and required CPR. She was taken to Tripoint Medical Center, where she died. She has not been publicly identified.

The second pedestrian, who was in a wheelchair, was taken to Lake Health West Medical Center with minor injuries.

“I was so shaken because I’m thinking this should have been us. We stepped up on the curb took another step and the car went right by us. I mean I felt the breeze go by my legs when that car hit the wall. I was just scared to death,” Rita said

The driver, who has not been identified, also suffered minor injuries. Rita and Mike describe her in her 80s and say she seemed to be going at least 25 miles an hour in the parking lot.

“Maybe she hit the gas instead of the break and kept hitting it I would assume,” Mike says.

The store remained opened, though it sustained some damage to the front.

Authorities are investigating the crash.
