AKRON, Ohio — Akron police honored officers killed in the line of duty during the department's annual police memorial service on Wednesday.

The service honored 25 Akron officers and one Kenmore deputy marshal.
Those officers are:
GUY NORRIS
Shot by three unknown desperadoes December 23, 1917, at 1:30 A.M. while searching them for weapons on S. High St., between Thornton and Voris St. Died December 24, 1917, at 4:00 A.M.
EDWARD J. COSTIGAN
Shot from ambush and killed while patrolling his beat in front of The Union Fireproof Warehouse Company, 27 N. High St., at 7:10 P.M. January 10, 1918. Died January 10, 1918 at 6:00 P.M.
JOSEPH H. HUNT
Shot from ambush and killed while patrolling his beat in front of The Union Fireproof Warehouse Company, 27 N. High St., at 7:10 P.M. January 10, 1918. Died January 12, 1918 at 10:00 P.M.
GETHIN H. RICHARDS
Shot at 1:00 A.M. March 12, 1918, while in performance of his duty, searching three suspects for weapons in front of 323 S. Main St. Died March 12, 1918 at 12:35 P.M.
GEORGE WERNE
Shot and instantly killed at 9:10 A.M. on March 9, 1919 while in performance of his duty searching three suspects for concealed weapons at the Hickory Street Railroad Crossing. Died March 9, 1919 at 9:30 A.M.
HAROLD ROGERS
Instantly killed on July 8, 1925 at 7:30 P.M. when his motorcycle collided with a truck on Brown Street near East South Street while in performance of his duty in attempting to apprehend a reckless driver. Died July 8, 1925 at 7:15 P.M.
WILLIAM H. GRUBBS
Shot and fatally wounded at 3:00 A.M. on May 6, 1929 while in the performance of his duty searching two suspects for concealed weapons at the corner of East Market Street and Johns Avenue. Died May 10, 1929 at 7:10 P.M.
HARLAND F. MANES
Shot and fatally wounded by gangsters on March 8, 1930 at 1:15 A.M. while in performance of his duty investigating an accident in which they were participants. Died March 9, 1930 at 10:15 A.M.
FORREST GOOD
Was shot and instantly killed at 10:50 P.M. June 21, 1931, while in performance of his duty in a gun battle with two bandits who had possession of a stolen automobile at N. Prospect and Bluff Streets.
KENNETH KNEPP
Instantly killed in a traffic collision March 3, 1933, at 3:00 P .M. during the performance of his duty as a motorcycle officer detailed to highway patrol.
WILLIAM S. PETERSON
Involved in a traffic collision, September 3, 1933, while pursuing a drunk driver. Suffered a coronary embolus and died October 31, 1933 at 7:50 P.M.
ARDEN D. WEESE
Instantly killed in a traffic collision at 9:57 A.M. March 22, 1946, during the performance of his duty as a motorcycle officer at W. Exchange and Burton Avenue. Died March 22, 1946 at 9:50 A.M.
FLOYD A. WEATHERHOLT, JR.
Killed by an armed burglar in a gunfight after tracking him through the snow to the rear of 508 E. Exchange Street at 2:25 A.M. March 25, 1960.
RONALD D. ROTRUCK
Killed in a cave-in of West Tallmadge Parkway during a flash- flood while assisting in the lifesaving rescue of two other victims on July 21, 1964, at 3:30 P.M.
EUGENE HOOPER
Shot while in the performance of his duty searching two armed robbery suspects on East Avenue near Chestnut Ridge at 3:29 A.M. April 10, 1965. He died at 3:35 A.M.
ROBERT E. DONAHUE
While subduing a resisting subject during an arrest this officer suffered a seizure while in the performance of his duty on July 27, 1968 at 8:42 A.M. He died four days later on July 31, 1968 at 3:47 P.M.
GLENN K. STEWART
Killed in a traffic collision September 5, 1970, on E. Waterloo Road while, in the performance of his duty as a motorcycle officer, he was attempting to apprehend a traffic violator. The incident occurred at 2:30 P.M. and the officer died at 4:20 P.M.
STEPHEN J. ONDAS
Shot at 1:11 A.M. October 21, 1972, while attempting to make an arrest at Courtland and Orlando Avenues. Died at 2:50 A.M.
GARY A. YOST
Shot and killed by an unknown person or persons involved in a break-in at 999 Swartz Road sometime between 1:00 and 3:00 A.M. on August 23, 1975.
BEN J. FRANKLIN
On January 10, 1992 at 9:21 P.M., while subduing a resisting subject, who had been placed under arrest for fighting during a basketball game at Buchtel High School, this officer suffered a fatal heart attack and died that same night at 10:17 P.M.
HAROLD L. WINTROW
Shot and paralyzed while in the performance of his duty searching two armed robbery suspects on East Avenue near Chestnut Ridge on April 10, 1965. Died on August 27, 1993 due to complications from his injuries.
GEORGE R. KNAFF
Killed in a traffic collision with a drunk driver on S. Hawkins Avenue at Lawton Street November 5, 1994, at 1:20 A.M. while responding to an emergency call for assistance. He died at 5:27 A.M.
FRANK D. MANCINI
Shot and paralyzed while in the performance of his duty searching two armed robbery suspects on East Avenue near Chestnut Ridge on April 10, 1965. Died on January 23, 2012 due to complications from his injuries.
JONATHAN R. LONG
Paralyzed in an automobile accident that occurred during a high-speed chase on Hazel Street of a fleeing subject on July 30, 1992. Died on August 15, 2013 due to complications from his injuries.
JUSTIN R. WINEBRENNER
Shot and killed on November 16, 2014 at 1:53 a.m. during a struggle with an armed subject who began shooting at patrons at a local establishment.
ARTHUR A. DOUBLEDEE – DEPUTY MARSHAL – KENMORE
Before Kenmore became part of Akron it was a political sub-division, just as many of the suburbs surrounding Akron are today. On October 12, 1916, Doubledee and another officer came to Akron and arrested two men near the intersection of Steiner Street and Sweitzer Street. As the marshals were leaving the area with the prisoners to board a streetcar back to Kenmore, one of the prisoners drew a knife and stabbed Doubledee in the heart and face, Deputy Marshal Arthur A. Doubledee died while being taken to the hospital at 9:30 PM.
