Amazon announces new fulfillment center on former Rolling Acres Mall site in Akron

The fulfillment centers are expected to create more than 2,500 full-time jobs.

AKRON, Ohio — Amazon's growth will soon have more impact on Ohio.

The retail brand on Monday announced more expansion plans for Ohio, including two new fulfillment centers in Akron and Rossford.

WKYC has confirmed that the Akron location will be on the site of the former Rolling Acres Mall on Romig Road.

According to a news release from Amazon, the fulfillment centers are expected to create more than 2,500 full-time jobs. About 1,500 of those jobs will be at the Akron location, according to the mayor's office.

"Ohio has been a great place to do business, serve customers and create jobs; as a result, we are thrilled to develop two state-of-the-art fulfillment centers in Akron and Rossford," Amazon Vice President of Global Customer Fulfillment Alicia Boler Davis said in a statement. "We're excited to grow our team in the Buckeye state, which now includes more than 8,500 Amazonians, and be part of the larger Ohio community."

The fulfillment centers will be used to pack and ship small items, such as books, toys and electronics to Amazon customers.

Amazon offers a $15 minimum wage and comprehensive benefits, as well as 20 weeks of paternal and maternal leave, according to the release.

“We are excited to have Amazon build on to its already strong business relationship with Ohio by selecting the City of Akron for its new facility,” Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said in the release. “Once completed, this fulfillment center will provide even more opportunities for good jobs to people seeking employment in and around Akron.”
