Man charged with kidnapping after weekend SWAT situation in Coventry Township

Authorities say the situation started when Andrew Scovern allegedly held a woman at gunpoint.

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio — A 25-year-old Coventry Township man was arrested on several charges for an hours-long incident in which, authorities say the suspect barricaded himself inside a home on Lake Vista Road.

The situation started around 6:20 a.m. Saturday when authorities responded to the scene in regard to a disturbance, in which Andrew Scovern allegedly grabbed a woman and held her at gunpoint.

“She convinced the suspect to release her and she was able to escort her children into a bedroom where they hid from the suspect,” the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “Another female in the residence escaped out of the front door.”

Deputies were able to get the woman and her children out of the residence through a bedroom window. The Summit County Sheriff’s SWAT team and hostage negotiation team responded to the scene.

“After several hours, Andrew Scovern exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident,” authorities said.

No injuries were reported with the victims involved in the incident. Authorities said the suspect, however, was treated at the scene by the Coventry Fire Department but did not disclose what he was treated for. Scovern was charged with the following: Kidnapping, having weapons under disability and inducing panic. He was taken to the Summit County Jail.
