WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — A Cleveland firefighter has been placed under suspension without pay after being arrested in Lake County last week.
According to police, 25-year-old Kevin McCarthy was taken into Willoughby police custody on Thursday just after 10 p.m.
In 911 audio obtained by 3News, McCarthy is heard saying, "I accidentally discharged a firearm, and I accidently shot my roommate." Officers were dispatched to McCarthy's residence, Willogrove Apartments, located in the 37300 block of Grove Avenue.
At the scene, McCarthy was found on his knees with his hands behind his back. He was taken into custody without further incident.
His roommate, identified as 25-year-old Christian Kilburg, suffered a single gunshot wound to the head.
Since his arrest, McCarthy has formally been charged with voluntary manslaughter, which is a felony of the first degree.
On Monday, the Cleveland Division of Fire announced that McCarthy had been suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the court proceedings.
McCarthy was hired by the Cleveland Fire Department in 2021. He had most recently been assigned to engine 41.
