CLEVELAND — Dominion Energy is issuing an alert to its Ohio customers about a scam that is reportedly seeing criminals pose as natural gas company workers to steal personal information.

The issue apparently stems from a corporate tax cut Dominion received as part of 2017's sweeping tax reform law, as the company is planning to issue Ohio customers a total tax credit of $50.9 million starting in April of next year. According to Dominion, scammers have been calling customers purporting to be company workers and demanding they share their banking or other info in order to receive the credit.

Dominion is stressing that this is indeed a fraud, as neither the utility nor state regulators will ever contact customers by phone or ask for personal info to receive a credit. In fact, the company says the credits will actually be added to people's bills automatically, with the average customer saving roughly $70 in the first year alone.

The company is encouraging customers to avoid giving their personal information to potential scammers, hang up the phone, and immediately report any suspicious phone calls to Dominion Energy and police. Do not attempt to dial any phone number the scammers provide.
