An annual block party in Garfield Heights turned violent on Monday evening as one person was fatally shot and several others were injured.
Police from Garfield Heights and several surrounding areas were called to the 13200 block of Alvin Avenue at around 10:30 p.m. for a shooting in front of a house and street. Investigators discovered that an annual block party was just wrapping up when an argument turned into random gunshots being fired into a crowd.
Officers located two children (one male, one female) and one adult man who had been shot. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the children were transported to an area hospital. Later, officers discovered that two more adult males had been taken from the scene in personal vehicles to local hospitals.
During one of the personal vehicle transports, the driver accidently shot himself in the leg after dropping off the victim of the Alvin shooting. That man was also medically treated.
Garfield Hts. police detectives, members of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner responded to the scene and are continuing the investigation.
