Wooftrax app: How walking a dog can earn money for your favorite animal shelter

The Wooftrax app gives you the option to pick your favorite shelter and they'll donate the money for you.

CLEVELAND — Imagine if just walking your dog could result in money being donated to shelters in need.

With Wooftrax, you’re one step closer to making that happen, and all you have to do is download the free app to start and make sure it’s open during your walk.

Make a profile for your dog, pick your favorite local shelter and start donating without even trying.

Because it’s so easy, Leah Backo from Geauga County’s Rescue Village says the goal is to get more people to sign up.

“For every mile, for every time that it's walked, we get a small percentage,” Backo said. “A lot of our volunteers will actually pick the dogs that they're walking with that day.”

Right now, they have a little more than 300 people walking for them and they’ve already made quite the impact.

“Those 323 [people] have walked 28,720 times for Rescue Village and collectively walked 41,184 miles, which is kind of crazy to think about,” Backo said.

It’s important for organizations like Lake County Humane Society, which also doesn’t get any funding from the government.

“We are a donation-based shelter, so all of our funding comes from donations and that's really important for us,” Maria Martin from Lake County said.

If a percentage of money isn’t enough, the company also gives the shelters incentives and perks.

“Wooftrax has been really good to us," Backo said. "They've actually donated food to us in the past as well."

According to the Web site, 50 million walks have been taken in more than 8,500 shelters across the country.
