EASTLAKE, Ohio — The Willoughby-Eastlake school district is asking all eighth graders at Eastlake Middle School to quarantine for 10 days after a student tested positive for COVID-19.

In a letter sent to parents, Superintendent Steve Thompson confirms contact tracing is under way and that the student in question will remain home until their symptoms subside. While the building will remain open and classes for other grades will continue to take place, eighth graders will not be allowed to return until Oct. 19 at the earliest.

"Our District is committed to the health and safety of our students, families, and staff," Thompson wrote. "We will continue to follow our strict safety protocols."

This is the second Willoughby-Eastlake student to contract the coronavirus since the school year began. Three weeks ago, 75 students and three teachers were forced to quarantine after a sixth grader at the School of Innovation in Willoughby Hills tested positive.

The quarantine request does not affect students at either Willoughby Middle School or Willowick Middle School. The district plans to provide updates "as needed."
