Barberton schools adjust learning next Friday to help students, staff manage stress and anxiety

Students will be given the opportunity to log on remotely to get support from mental health partners.

BARBERTON, Ohio — Editor's note: Video at the top of this story is from Nov. 2, 2020.

It has certainly been a stressful year. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the intense election season, Barberton school officials have decided to take an alternate approach with their students and staff for one day next week.

“We have noticed a lot of stress and anxiety in our buildings and with students at home,” the district posted on their Facebook page Wednesday morning. “People are struggling with how to function during this extremely difficult time – so we wanted to find a way to better help and support our students and staff!”

Their solution? They are not holding traditional classes on Friday, Nov. 13.

“All students will stay home this day and learn remotely from professionals how to manage stress and anxiety.”

For students:

“Instead of standard coursework, students at home can log on remotely and get support from our mental health partners on how to cope during this stressful time. They will be able to log on and learn about coping methods that may help them, their family and their friends. Principals will be sending more information home soon.”

For staff:

“Our staff will report to work and do the same thing, getting training on how to better help our students, families, and themselves during this stressful time in our lives.”
