Anonymous donor expands matching program by $10 million for Case Western Reserve University

'I hope to inspire others to advance the opportunities for teaching and research in the specialties most important to them,' the anonymous donor said.

CLEVELAND — An anonymous donor has pledged $10 million to help endow professorships at Case Western Reserve University, the school announced on Friday.

This same donor made a challenge to supporters of the school three years ago in order to help endow a total of 10 professorships at Case’s medical and engineering schools. That challenge meant that the anonymous donor would commit $20 million in matching donations. This new donation is in addition to that previous $20 million, upping the donor’s total to $30 million.

“Ultimately, our students benefit from gifts like this,” President Kaler told alumni at a homecoming luncheon, “and they’re the reason why we’re here, after all.”

This new donation, used to match other donations, will be able to support five additional endowed professorships at the School of Medicine, as well as professorships or fellowships at Case School Engineering.

“Faculty expertise and cutting-edge research are among the hallmarks of the world’s most renowned research universities,” said the anonymous donor, an alumnus of both schools. “Case Western Reserve embodies both. Through this challenge, I hope to inspire others to advance the opportunities for teaching and research in the specialties most important to them.”

The school says that endowed professorships are among the highest honors that a faculty member can receive, and also provide resources to support research and other academic endeavors.
