Free tuition? The University of Akron's 'Zips Affordability Scholarship' will cover the entire cost for Pell-eligible students

The Zips Affordability Scholarship will cover the entire cost of tuition and the general fee after federal and state grants have been applied.

AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron has created a scholarship that will enable those students who are eligible for Pell Grants to receive free tuition for four years.

The Zips Affordability Scholarship will cover the entire cost of tuition and the general fee after federal and state grants have been applied.

"This brand-new scholarship was created because we know the cost of college can be a barrier for students, and grants and scholarships don’t always cover tuition and fees. This incredible new scholarship will help you start and finish your degree," the University of Akron states on its site announcing the scholarship.

There are three eligibility requirements:

  • You must be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant.
  • You must live in the University’s primary six-county service area (Cuyahoga, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit and Wayne counties).
  • You must be a new, first-time freshman starting at UA in fall 2021 or later.

Once you receive the Zips Affordability Scholarship, to remain eligible, you’ll need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year, maintain good academic standing (2.0 GPA) and remain Pell eligible.

Students must enroll full-time each semester (not counting summers) and can receive the scholarship for all eight consecutive semesters or until the completion of a bachelor’s degree, whichever comes first.

To be considered for the Zips Affordability Scholarship, you must apply for admission to UA and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. Click here for more information and helpful links.
