Fire chief says heat lamps to blame in Medina barn fire

Some animals were killed.

MEDINA, Ohio — Fire officials say heat lamps are to blame for a barn fire that killed some animals Monday morning.

Medina Fire Chief Bob Painter says the fire was reported around 7:30 a.m. in the 7300 block of Tower Road.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire, but Painter says a horse and some sheep were killed in the 80-by-100-foot barn. He added that some rabbits and pigs may have also died. An exact count on animal fatalities was not available.

Painter said the fire was caused by heat lamps inside the barn used to keep baby pigs warm. The lamps set fire to some hay, resulting in heavy smoke inside the barn.

No civilians reported any injuries.
