Former Cleveland Indians 1B Carlos Santana reportedly traded to Seattle Mariners

According to multiple reports, pending a physical, Carlos Santana will be sent from the Philadelphia Phillies to the Seattle Mariners.

Last offseason, Carlos Santana left the Cleveland Indians to sign a 3-year, $60 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.

As it turns out, Santana's tenure in the City of Brotherly Love is only going to last one year.

According to multiple reports, including one from MLB Network's Jon Morosi, Santana is a part of a trade that will send him and infielder J.P. Crawford to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for shortstop Jean Segura. In trading Santana, Philadelphia is removing its second-largest salary from its payroll, while presumably reopening first base for Rhys Hoskins, who moved to the outfield upon Santana's arrival last season.

That Philadelphia would opt to move off of the two years remaining on the 32-year-old Santana's contract doesn't come as much of a surprise. In 161 games with the Phillies, he hit for a career-low .229 average, while also seeing dips in his on-base percentage (.352), slugging percentage (.414) and OPS (.766).

Philadelphia finished third in the National League East last season with an 80-82 record. Given their aggressive nature in the open market, the Phillies have been linked to prized free agent outfielder Bryce Harper.

In rejoining an American League team in Seattle, Santana will have the opportunity to spend time as a designated hitter, as he did frequently throughout his time in Cleveland. Last week, the Mariners traded second baseman Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz to the New York Mets in exchange for former Indians outfielder Jay Bruce, relievers Anthony Swarzak and Gerson Bautista and a pair of top prospects.
