Red Cross makes another plea for blood donors amid 'severe shortage'

Those who donate July 7-31 will receive a $10 Amazon gift card by e-mail with a chance to win gas for a year.

CLEVELAND — The American Red Cross is making another push to find more blood donors amid a “severe blood shortage” that is impacting the entire country.

“Donors of all blood types – especially type O and those giving platelets – are urged to make an appointment to give now and help ensure hospital shelves are stocked with blood products over the Fourth of July holiday and beyond,” the Red Cross said in a press release Monday.

It's the second time this month the Red Cross has pushed for more blood donors because of the shortage. The Red Cross also said their teams are working around the clock to provide blood products to hospitals with an “unusually high” number of traumas, emergency room visits, overdoses and transplants.

“As a result of the blood shortage, some hospitals are being forced to slow the pace of elective surgeries until the blood supply stabilizes, delaying crucial patient care. In addition, while summer is traditionally a time when blood donations decline, this year is particularly challenging as many Americans receive their vaccinations and resume summer activities after more than a year of limited interactions and travel, leading to lower donor turnout.”

Donors can schedule an appointment in the following ways:

  • The Red Cross Blood Donor app
  • RedCrossBlood.org
  • Calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767)
  • Enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device

All donors who give blood July 1-6 will be given a Red Cross embroidered hat. Those who come July 7-31 will receive a $10 Amazon gift card by e-mail with a chance to win gas for a year.

Those who have received a COVID-19 vaccine can donate in most cases. Knowing the name of the vaccine you received is important when determining your donation eligibility, officials said.
