City of Cleveland to no longer provide AIDS assistance after state cuts $1.5 million grant

The grant was dedicated to educating and assisting the public in the prevention and spread of HIV/AIDS.

CLEVELAND — Cleveland's Department of Public Health has announced that it will no longer provide assistance for HIV-AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections (STI) in the new year.

On Tuesday, the city announced that the state of Ohio is cutting a $1.5 million grant dedicated to educating and assisting the public in the prevention and spread of HIV/AIDS. As a result, the city will no longer be able to provide the following: 

  • Outreach to clients with positive HIV or STI results 
  • Prevention services including, targeted HIV and STI testing, counseling, treatment, outreach and education. 
  • Disease investigations.
  • Health promotion work throughout the community. 

The city of Cleveland says it has requested information as to why the decision was made to discontinue the grant and has yet to receive a response.
