Two Cleveland charter schools closed Wednesday due to 'significant number of illnesses'

The building will be cleaned and disinfected.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Two Cleveland charter schools are cancelling classes on Wednesday after about a dozen teachers called off sick on Tuesday.

According to a letter from the principals of the elementary and middle schools, which are in the same building, Citizens Academy East and Citizens Leadership Academy East are closing due to “a significant number of illnesses.”

The building will be cleaned and disinfected.

The letter warns that “if your student experiences any symptoms such as fever, headache, lack of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, contact your family doctor."

Leaders also wants families to take precautions and clean the students’ personal items while they’re out of school.

“If you’ve got a runny nose or if you’ve got a fever or if you feel sick, don’t go to school, don’t go to work, don’t go to that family gathering and infect Auntie Martha or Uncle Sam,” explains University Hospitals Director of Wellness, Dr. Roy Buchinsky.

He has three ways to prevent the spread of germs around the holidays.

  1. Keep hand sanitizer with you at all times.
  2. Wash your hands frequently
  3. Use common sense

“These viruses are not just devils but they are devilishly clever, and these viruses are resilient, so they are all over,” he says.

He also suggests building your immune system by exercising, eating and resting well.

If you’re the person who is sick, you should stay home or at the very least let your family and the other guests know you’re not feeling well to prevent close contact.
