Cleveland Clinic completes conversion of overflow coronavirus facility

Known as 'Hope Hospital,' the facility will house more than 300 beds for COVID-19 patients if the need arises.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Clinic has completed preparations to convert the main building at the Health Education Campus of Case Western Reserve University into a surge hospital for coronavirus patients.

The facility is called "Hope Hospital," and will initially house 327 beds specifically for coronavirus patients, but can expand up to 1,000 beds should the need arise.

If the facility does begin operation, Hope Hospital patients will be what's called low-acuity, meaning they don't require ventilators or large amounts of oxygen. And, while the facility may be temporary, it will be fully staffed, "just like on a regular nursing floor," the Clinic said in a press release.

As of April 2, none of the Cleveland Clinic's hospitals are at or over capacity, according to a press release, but officials are still planning to add beds across the Clinic's Ohio locations in anticipation of a surge.

As of Thursday the Ohio Department of Health has reported 8,414 total cases of coronavirus across the state, with the virus claiming 389 lives.
