Colon cancer's deadly trend on "Health Yeah! With Monica Robins"

Why are more men of color dying from this type of cancer and why is it also impacting younger men?

CLEVELAND — EDITOR'S NOTE: The video in the player above was originally posted on November 11, 2020.

When actor Chadwick Boseman passed away from colon cancer in August 2020 at the age of 43, it brought to light a deadly trend.

The American Cancer Society says, colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed type of cancer in men and women in the United States. And it's impacting younger men, and more men of color than ever before.

Senior Health Correspondent Monica Robins recently spoke with Dr. Suneel Kamath, a GI Medical Oncologist with the Cleveland Clinic about what younger men need to understand about their bodily functions.

Robins and Dr. Kamath also spoke about the importance of being your own best advocate by understanding the often "hidden" symptoms of colorectal cancer.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, symptoms of colon cancer can include:

  • Narrow stools
  • Anemia
  • Weight loss
  • Blood in the stool

Oftentimes, these symptoms do not appear until the cancer has advanced to the later stages, so doctors say it's important to undergo colon cancer screening when you reach the appropriate age. The American Cancer Society says, Americans who are over the age of 45 should undergo yearly screenings for colon cancer.
