COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Chiropractors will join doctors to develop guidelines for clearing young athletes for play after they've sustained head injuries, following a late addition to a midterm budget bill.

Gov. John Kasich signed the measure this week.

It creates a study committee to develop guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and clearance of concussions and head injuries sustained by athletes.

The panel of doctors, chiropractors and Ohio's health director also will develop the minimum education requirements needed for those who clear players.

The panel's creation sets up potential changes to concussion rules that doctors' and chiropractors' groups have clashed over for about two years. Chiropractors have sought the authority to return young players to competition, though the Ohio State Medical Association says a physician should have oversight in the decision.
