CLEVELAND — Gyms, fitness centers, yoga studios and recreation areas have shut down indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

To keep active, an overwhelming number of people have resorted to purchasing at home gym equipment in near record numbers.

According to Chuck Herman, owner of Specialty Fitness Equipment in Warrensville Heights, they’ve seen an influx of customer business. What they’re seeing is representative to what they would typically see around the holidays.

He describes it as “truly unbelievable!”

The increase of people that they’ve seen has been more impressive than any Black Friday shopping day or any other holiday in recent memory.

If you’re still wanting to buy at-home gym equipment, Herman suggests calling and speaking with a store representative first about what your needs are so you can get the most effective at-home training possible.

Although home deliveries are limited, folks can still come out to the showroom while practicing safe social distancing. As expected, equipment is flying off the shelf, so again call ahead to make sure the equipment that you’re looking for is in stock.

Given that many of the gym suppliers around the country are running with a skeleton crew, it may take a little longer than normal for your at-home gym equipment to arrive.

Herman says that the most popular items, in light of COVID-19, have been multi-adjustable angle utility benches, resistance bands, dumbbells and spin bikes. If you’re looking for these items -- be patient. It may take 1-2 weeks for delivery.

As a last bit of advice, Chuck says, you can get a fantastic workout at home -- make due with what you have and reach out and contact a health and wellness specialist to make sure your at-home workout is safe and effective. There are a lot of creative ways to get a good workout in the safety and comfort of your own home.
