American Cancer Society donation stores reopen

The Discovery Shop sells gently used items that have been donated to help support the fight against cancer.

CLEVELAND — As we cautiously live with the Coronavirus, Ohio has begun to reopen it’s economy.

The American Cancer Society has announced that their Discovery Store in Fairview Park will reopen June 5th with extra safety precautions in place. The society's other area stores in Akron and Chardon opened last month.

“We are excited to welcome shoppers back to support our life saving mission, but the safety of our customers, volunteers and staff always comes first. We have done a thorough cleaning of shops, trained staff and volunteers in strict safety protocol outlined by the CDC, and are taking numerous safety precautions,” said Megan Roether, vice president of business planning and operations for the American Cancer Society.

According to a press release, the precautions being taken include:

  • All staff and volunteers will wear masks; we are requesting all customers to wear them as well.
  • Shops will limit the number of guests permitted in the shops at the same time.
  • Social distancing will be reinforced through signs and indications of distance throughout the shop and checkout areas.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available for public use.
  • Donations are being isolated prior to being processed and placed on the sales floor.

According to the release, The Discovery Shop sells high quality, gently used items that have been donated to help support the fight against cancer. Last year, Ohio Discovery Shops raised two million dollars for the American Cancer Society.

As the shops reopen, donations will be accepted, but stores will have reduced hours to allow for additional cleaning. Appointments are encouraged.

Hours of operation for Northeast Ohio areas are:

  • Fairview Park: 20470 Lorain Rd--Monday-Friday: 10 a.m.-4:00 p.m.; Saturday 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
  • Akron: 1690 W Market St--Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
  • Chardon: Maple Leaf Plaza--Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.
