Giant Eagle discusses inventory, restocking shelves amid coronavirus concerns

Stores have been hit with heavy foot traffic as shoppers try to buy supplies amid the coronavirus outbreak.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio — If you've been in a grocery store these last few days, you've probably encountered bare shelves and crowded checkout lines amid shoppers' concerns of the coronavirus.

Today, Giant Eagle leaders addressed some of their most frequently asked questions relating to inventory, deliveries and sanitation.

"We're asking that you trust us, and that you know that just because that product is not in your store in this moment, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist," a Giant Eagle official said Wednesday morning. "That product right now that you don't see in your stores is on its way on a truck, and we have at least one truck coming to each store every day."

They also said team members are working around the clock at each of their stores to restock shelves and keep things clean and sanitized.

“That first wave came in strong and it came in fast and it lasted maybe a little bit longer than we anticipated," said Jannah Jablonowski, a spokesperson for Giant Eagle. "Once that kind of settled a little bit, we had to take stock and say, ‘What do we need and how do we get it quickly?’”

Among the biggest hurdles is keeping enough product in stock as manufacturers work to meet the demand. As a result, some items will have purchase limits until further notice.
