Ohio coronavirus update: 4,782 confirmed cases, 167 deaths; Gov. DeWine allows carryout alcoholic beverages

DeWine also identified 167 prison inmates for potential release due to coronavirus emergency.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, and Department of Health director Dr. Amy Acton held their daily briefing on the state's response to the COVID-19 pandemic at the Statehouse in Columbus.

Prior to the briefing, the Ohio Department of Health announced that there are now 4,782 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Ohio. 167 people have died and another 1354 have been hospitalized.

DeWine announced on Tuesday that he has issued an order allowing a maximum of two carryout alcoholic beverages at restaurants with permits.

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to affect Ohio's prison system, Governor Mike DeWine also identified 167 inmates who he believes should be considered for emergency release due to concerns of overcrowding.

At midnight, the state's enhanced stay-at-home policy went into effect until May 1. The new provisions include the following: 

  • Any person entering Ohio from out of state is asked to self-quarantine for 14 days.
  • A restriction on the number of people allowed at essential establishments that remain open.
  • A board to evaluate and render guidance in situations where two local health departments have come to a different conclusion on what is or is not an essential business.
  • Weddings are permitted, although any receptions are required to follow social distancing guidelines.
  • Campgrounds closed with the exception of situations where a camper or recreational vehicle in a campground serves as somebody’s permanent residence and they are unable to secure safe alternative housing.
  • Ohio State Parks remain open, but the director can take action to enforce the orders that have been issued.
