With prom season and high school graduations right around the corner, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said he will offer updated COVID-19 safety guidance during a 2 p.m. press conference Monday so these events can move forward safely.

“It has to be simple, and it has to be focused on what really matters,” Gov. DeWine said of safety precautions Monday morning while touring a COVID vaccination clinic at Ohio State.

He said the guidance comes as we’ve learned a lot more about proper safety precautions that are aimed at successfully slowing the spread of COVID-19, which includes the use of masks and hand washing.

"What we know today is that masks really, really, really work," he said.

Here are other highlights of what Gov. DeWine is expected to discuss:

Ohio's vaccination efforts

How is the state doing in the vaccination process? How many more doses can the state expect in the weeks ahead? With more Ohioans now eligible to receive a vaccine, have there been issues with appointment availability? These are likely to be addressed.

Spread of COVID variants and increase in new infections

Gov. DeWine also said he will offer an update on how the spread of variants is impacting the state's increase in daily infections.

Looking ahead to this summer

Gov. DeWine said Ohioans need to keep these four things in mind:

  • Wearing a mask
  • Keep distancing
  • Hand washing
  • Outside is better than inside

“If we can keep those things in mind, those four things, we’re going to be able to do about anything we want to do this summer.”
