Some front line workers left out of Ohio's newly expanded vaccine priority list

Some employees like dus drivers and restaurant workers are wondering when they'll be able to access the shots.

CLEVELAND — With each swipe of a grocery store item or Amazon drop off delivery, many front line workers like those with RTA are wondering when they'll be eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine. William H. Nix Sr. is the President of Amalgamated Transit Union 268 who represents RTA employees.

"As Ohio rolls out the vaccine, we should not be forgotten any more than other public servants such as teachers and first responders," William H. Nix Sr., president of Amalgamated Transit Union 268 which represents RTA employees, said. "We need access to the vaccine as soon as possible."

Knowing that a higher than normal amount of vaccines are on the way to Ohio, those in the restaurant business like Hooley House's Richie Reece also want the shot.

"We were prioritized and allowed to be open as an essential business. and certainly I think that's still the case and we should be on the priority list," Reece told 3News

Reece wants those who work for him to have access to the vaccine, if they want it, to protect Hooley House customers and fellow staff members.

"They're sometimes a little uncomfortable even coming into work because they don’t want to take something home," he added

Even with the coronavirus safety protocols RTA implemented, some drivers are concerned about facemasks.

"Members are still worried about the day-to-day operations because [face masks are] supposed to be mandatory here in Ohio, but you have a lot of passengers who want to board without one," Nix admitted.

While both Nix and Reece say they understand and respect the priority list, they want their fellow employees to be in the mix since they interact with the public daily. It will also help Ohio get "back to normal."

"I think they'd feel much safer if the restaurant employees...were allowed to get their vaccinations sooner," Reece said.
